Greetings,
I suppose the caveat to that though is that samatha existed prior to the Buddha's dispensation and it didn't enlighten anyone, in and of itself.

Greetings Mettafuture,

In the long run it involves a more complete renunciation... eventually renouncing even the subtlest perception of self and "I".mettafuture wrote:Or does the dhamma, in your opinion, call for a more extreme renunciation?

Re: Jhāna According to the Pāḷi Nikāyas
Greetings Vepacitta, My personal advice to Retro (puts on Agony Aunt Hat) is to just watch and not get frigged up over steps. Just watch and do the meditation (breath, Buddho, whatever) that'll take you into it. And it'll do it within 45 minutes - then quicker - then quicker - so you can get there a...

Re: Science-Meru
Greetings Rahula, I appreciate the clarification, thank you. Specific to your thesis, I'd be very careful in trying to defend the Dhamma or the Buddha against scientific viewpoints. Frankly, I think fighting science with Dhamma-science misses the whole point of the Dhamma (i.e. liberation), and many...

Re: Science-Meru
Greetings Rahula, Please be honest - what is the reason behind your queries? Since you joined this forum, all your posts have focused exclusively on this issue, seemingly with the purpose to discredit the Buddha as a trustworthy source of spiritual guidance. Is this your motivation, or is your motiv...

Re: Why can't more teach like Bhikkhu Bodhi & Ajahn Brahm?
Greetings Mettafuture, Or do some of you prefer this kind of teaching approach? It's hard for me to comment, because I tend to read dhamma talks, essays and books rather than listen to them. I do find that Bhikkhu Bodhi writes well though, and to that extent is easy to read and produces very readabl...

Re: Modern Techniques?
Thanks for the info, Mike.
As for Analayo, it would help to know if he was referring specifically to the Satipatthana Sutta, or perhaps some other sutta in the Sutta Pitaka, specifically addressing the subject of walking meditation.

Re: Science - Earthquake, Meru, Big Fish
Greetings Sherab, As a figure of authority, he has no business making those statements as if he was an expert in those areas. I think you are super-imposing your own value judgements and expectations in a particularly unskilful way. The fact you have constructed this dilemma and are in turn conflict...

Re: Modern Techniques?
Greetings Mike, I don't understand the comment about mental events, and lack of instructions for being mindful of what the body is doing. I don't see what this is in connection to. All I saw were comments suggesting that the lifting, moving forward, and placing of the feet (whether in 3-step, 6-step...
