Re: What is the "stilling of all formations"?
The attitude towards the aggregates has been transformed. Things still arise, they do not stop arising, but, no longer being regarded as mine, there will be no pull towards them, no aversion away from them and no delusion in regard to them. Sure, but the "stilling of all formations" doesn...

Re: What is the "stilling of all formations"?
You then wonder what would be that which isn't in flux, that isn't moving or changing in some way. As the mind looks for this, you let the thinking process fall away, and it goes quiet. You then notice a more subtle activity of the mind, intending. You let go of all intentions, and the the stillnes...

Re: What is the "stilling of all formations"?
I don't think we're any closer to answering the question I posed: "Which aspects of mental activity actually cease?"

Re: What is the "stilling of all formations"?
Craving, clinging, and becoming actually are sankhara's, so these cease. But what does actually mean , practically speaking? What about thinking? Emotions? Memories? Which mental activities cease specifically? One approach might be to say that is the activity of the sankharas aggregate which ceases...

Re: From "not mine" follows "not yours"
All the consciousness that has arisen is just a huge heap of consciousness. But consciousness is localised on individual sentient beings. My "bits" of consciousness are distinct from yours. In the same way that waves are unique "bits" of water. What is the base for your statemen...

I started a thread on the "stilling of all formations" so as not to derail this one.

What is the "stilling of all formations"?
What is the "stilling of all formations", as here for example: http://www.accesstoinsight.org/tipitaka/kn/iti/iti.3.072-090x.irel.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; I assume it refers to the stilling of all sankharas, but what does this mean, practically speaking...

So would the stilling of all sankharas mean the complete cessation of mental activity?katavedi wrote:But this wouldn't be the stilling of all sankharas yet.

Re: Fourth Tetrad Anapanasati Sutta
I'm not particularly clear on how breath meditation is related to the fourth tetrad of the Anapanasati Sutta. I wonder if other members who practise breath meditation, could relate their technique to this part of the text. One approach is to notice the inconstancy of the breath. There have been qui...

Re: About "Female & Male"
"Buddhadasa Bhikkhu" In Dhamma language, however, they refer to the distinguishing marks and signs of certain duties which Nature has assigned to human beings: duties which must be performed co-operatively, in partnership. I don't see this as "Dhamma language", just the Bikkhu's...

Re: The Production of the Eye.
"Seeing" is all we experience now. The difference is that we add on conceiving around self-view, as MN1 explains. I agree. My point, though, is that conceiving of the eye, forms, and eye-consciousness supports the conceiving around self-view, because it implies a subject of experience. I ...
