Re: Selling medicine marijuana, is it violate the 5th precept
Moderation is key. If people can relieve pain and make an unbearable situation bareable it might be the lesser evil. Remember that a lot of food contains ingredients which influence your mind (think chocolate or coffee) not to mention the chemicals your body makes. It is no joke that love is intoxic...

Re: New Meditation Forum Structure
Simple. I really like that there is a new Ethical Conduct section here. My only suggestion for that section is to mention the term "Sila" in the title so that newcomers know what to search for if they want to know more.

I agree with Goofaholix, but I would extend that period as a layman to a year or so. I must say it is a very wise decision, so I wish you good luck

Re: Buddhist cults?
The rates are the least of the problems it seems. I would advise to get out of there. A teacher which is genuine will have a teaching that leads to the truth and is truthful himself. He will also teach compassion with compassion and encourages you to think for yourself and teach yourself. I see none...

Re: staying awake during meditation, non standard ideas welcome.
I want to add to this all that when you take a nap it is best to take a power nap . This is a small nap of no more than 30 minutes (I usually do 20) and causes you to feel surprisingly rested. Do it for any longer than 30 minutes and you will slip in the deep sleep phase which when broken off causes...

Re: Vipassana movement
It was meant by me as a what-if scenario for the sake of argument as I explain in the first sentence. I surely hope that it is not really the case.Tiltbillings wrote:It would be quite wrong to assume that all American teachers of vipassana teach a "light" version of the Dhamma.

Re: Vipassana movement
Although Tiltbillings explained that the following quote is not (entirely) true I want you to pretend it is for the sake of argument: It appears to me that their object was to bring Mindfulness Meditation, Insight Meditation/Vipassna to the US in a secular manner, so as to avoid the religious connot...

Ron Fricke: SAMSARA
I saw this movie anouncement/trailer on a site I frequent: http://vimeo.com/46273869" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; From the summary: Expanding on the themes they developed in BARAKA (1992) and CHRONOS (1985), SAMSARA explores the wonders of our world from the mundane to th...
