Re: Why indifference is worse than pleasure?

I can't be sure, but my short answer based on my own reasoning is that pleasure can be kusala (wholesome), while indifference is always akusala (unwholesome).

Re: Wat Dhammakaya

Christianity is not addressed in the Pali Canon, you will never find the Buddha talking about a God-man who sacrifices himself to save the world by destroying death and propagating a moral teaching of extreme pacifism. What is addressed is a handful of views that modern Christians could be accused ...

Re: Wat Dhammakaya

The Dhammakaya is in the Pali Canon Yes, and so is Christianity. ....!? Christianity in the Pali Canon? :jawdrop: That would be a very impressive demonstration of time-travel by the Buddha, to be able to address Christians 5-600 years before Christ. Why would Buddha need to time travel or address C...

Re: Is Theravada Buddhism a Religion?

I find this to be a topic that goes round and round. Some follow the teachings and the canon religiously, some follow it only to the extent that it suits them. My canned response to the title question: If you want it to be.

Re: Wat Dhammakaya

1. In the Pathikavagga Sutta (Thai ที. ปา. 11/55/92), Lord Buddha says Dhammakaya is a name for the Buddha. “Dhammakaya, Dhammabhuto, Brahmakaya and Brahmabhuto are all names for the Tathagata.” The Thai Dighanikaya Commentary (Thai ที. อฏ. 3/50) explains that this is because Dhamma came from his h...

Re: Wat Dhammakaya

I do not think the dhammakaya followers belong in this forum; what they teach has strayed too far from the Pali Canon and thus, Theravada Buddhism. Certainly there is a place for them. This is a view based on what I've been told from those who've attended the Wat Dhammakaya in the community in whic...

You know what you're reading is nothing but crock when it talks about nirvana (nibbana) as a place. Nibbana is not a place.

Re: What is "Right"?

Many people are replacing "right" and "wrong" as they are used in the N8FP and other parts of the canon with "wholesome" and "unwholesome".

Re: Wat Dhammakaya

Is Dhammawheel ready to welcome online members who attend the wat, that's the true test here. Dialogue is badly needed. Perhaps in the Other Paths sub forum. Re: Hope in Buddhism

Hope is defined in the Oxford English Dictionary as "expectation of something desired". This is how I traditionally understand "hope", together with the idea that having hope will get a person through difficult times without taking any action towards the outcome that is hoped fo...

yun or unalome. It's best to ask a monk who is familiar with the design; my Thai Buddhist friend says it comes from an old Khmer design based on the pali/sanskrit traditions. Used in white magic and by some monks.

Re: Did God create everything that exists?

It takes a lot of Moha to believe that evil is the absence of anything. Evil involves intentional action; without intentional action, there is no evil. If one were to argue that good is the absence of evil, then you may be on to something. Great points to ponder over. Can you expand a little bit. W...

Same for me. I'll have an occasional drink for business/social purpose, but that's very rare.

Re: About romantic relationships

..... I am on the other hand thinking a lot of disappearing into a monastery for a longer time and I know exactly what she will think of that. Many times I am just scared how forcefully she is pressing for all the material steps of a relationship, e.g. moving together, marry, children and so on. Ti...
