Is a monk sitting next to nun during talk ok with Vinaya?
I wasn't sure if my eyes were deceiving me, but I think I saw a well-known monk - please, I do not want any names mentioned, let's keep this impersonal - but during a talk, he appeared to be sitting next to a nun, ie, on the same raised platform, they sat approximately one metre apart, I'd estimate....

Re: Dealing with Depression and Anxiety
I could go on. But it seems clearer and clearer to me that morality and living by the "rules" and believing that someone is watching and keeping an account of what we do might make us mentally sick. I used to think kamma worked like that, but I now believe no-one need be watching, for kam...

manas To be a bit more clear, instead of getting lost in the vast maze of concepts, views and obsessions the Buddha teaches the Dhamma via the middle. Its good to bear in mind what Nama-rupa is: “And what [monks] is name-&-form? Feeling, perception, intention, contact, & attention : This is...

Re: Zen master teachings better than gotama buddhas teaching?
I'm only interested in the pali suttas, have read enough of other religions & sects over all these years to no longer be interested in getting more confused. However: while reading this topic - and noticing how we all have different points of view regarding this, also noticing how my own view c...

Re: Is the Sutta Nipata the oldest and therefore the only truly reliable text in the canon?
I just read the relevant sections in "A History of Mindfulness" by Bhikkhu Sujato. He disagrees about the conclusions drawn by some on the Sutta Nipata and finds that there are some suttas that are earliest and a collection that is earliest: ...all of the texts identified as earliest disc...

Re: Referring to the Buddha non-reverentially
Because I live in a society where reverence and even basic good manners are often lacking, I strive to be respectful at all times towards the Buddha, whether in body, speech or thought. I can see how our modern minds might chafe somewhat at the notion of reverence, and that makes me suspect that it'...

I believe the squiggly things are called diacritical marks. The following might help.

Re: Help wanted: what do suttas say, about metta even for very evil people?
I read every reply and quote, and I thank you all. Reading some of them, I literally got tears in my eyes - because, I really do want to learn how to be free from ill-will, towards any being whatsoever. It has come to mean more to me lately, especially. I can see how much freer my heart would feel, ...

Help wanted: what do suttas say, about metta even for very evil people?
Hello all I like walking down the street, and having this feeling of goodwill towards all I encounter - other people, dogs being walked, birds flying around, insects...it's a positive & uplifting emotion which as Buddhists, we are encouraged to cultivate. However, when I look deep into my heart,...

Re: Breaking the 5th precept. How it leads to suffering
By chance, I just came across this video; from about 33:00 or soon after (I find it hard to pinpoint the exact spot), Ajahn Achalo begins talking about the 5th precept (although the entire talk is excellent). I think he explains this issue better than I.
