Re: enjoying nature
By seeing the drawbacks of pleasant sensation (sukha vedana) we eventually let go of the mind's tendency to give rise to craving for pleasant sensation. Craving is the cause of suffering and ignorance about the true nature (no pun intended) of pleasant sensations give rise to craving- so we must und...

Re: The Cart Simile
"Now I am frail, Ananda, old, aged, far gone in years. This is my eightieth year, and my life is spent. Even as an old cart, Ananda, is held together with much difficulty, so the body of the Tathagata is kept going only with supports. http://www.accesstoinsight.org/tipitaka/dn/dn.16.1-6.vaji.ht...

Re: Compassion Vs real Practice
Keep your precepts. Have metta in your mindfulness, which you try to maintain all the time. Rub away your defilements, develop your wholesome qualities. Then watch impermanence when your metta and mindfulness is established! There's your samatha and vipassana -all you need for enlightenment. Practic...

Re: How to see deeply into one's own mind?
[Ajita:] "Everywhere flow the streams.[defilements]What is the obstruction for the streams, tell me the restricting of them, by what are they cut off?" [The Lord:] "Whatever streams are in the world, it is mindfulness that obstructs them and restricts them, and by wisdom they are cut ...

Re: How to see deeply into one's own mind?
Hi Whynotme There is a practice called mindfulness of the mind (cittanupassana). What it does is to make you more aware of what is going on in your mind by increasing the sensitivity of your mindfulness of the mind. You would typically focus anywhere inbetween the top of your head to around the leve...

Re: Thought suppression by Samatha
Hi Matheesha, Just remember this is a path of mistakes, sometimes we reach dead ends, other times wrong use of things (I tend to go with the latter). I like your responce to Daverupa, it is certainly a praise worthy and simle version of what has been suggested. But just to note there that is the se...

Re: The place of dana in the path & its development
Hi Starter, Is giving good? Yes, would be the answer. Developing basic goodness is a big part of the path. Otherwise subtle defilements creep in. Also if you had a heart of metta you would give, without thinking twice, and that is a good thing. It is an outward manifestation of metta, showing that m...

Re: Thought suppression by Samatha
@reflection: thanks for that suggestion. I will play around with this a bit. @daverupa: it could be that I need to balance my faculties as samadhi has become unwieldy. Alternatively development of samadhi with and without vitakka (but not in jhana) is mentioned in some suttas may have something to d...

Re: "disenchantment" or "revulsion"?
Revulsion from Mahasi Sayadaw's classic vipassana manual 'Progress of Insight' 8. Knowledge of Disgust (Nibbida) Seeing thus the misery in conditioned things (formations), his mind finds no delight in those miserable things but is entirely disgusted with them. At times, his mind becomes, as it wer...

Re: Wholesome development of personality
The 10 requires a development of mundane right view (-karma, rebirth) , so might be challenging, but nevertheless helpful. Here is another list I find useful -from the karaniyamatta sutta: The discourse gets divided into two parts. The first detailing the standard of moral conduct required by one wh...

Re: Wholesome development of personality
Hi Rowyourboat. Where did you get the list from? What about the noble eightfold path itself, or the ten-wholesome-actions? we do need to develop the wholesome aspects of the personality before we can get rid of the person :) Hi Cittasanto, I think something like this list (with gratitude, contentme...

Re: Thought suppression by Samatha
Greetings Matheesha, In your situation I would restrict the amount of time on samatha and spend more time on vipassana. I am not convinced that maintaining intense samatha is ideal outside of the seclusion of retreat. kind regards, Ben Thanks Ben. I have stopped doing Samatha actually and trying to...

Re: Thought suppression by Samatha
In my experience, samatha results in more intentional thought-formation; thoughts aren't suppressed in a general way, they simply don't arise as randomly. It's like bullet-time in the mind, not vacuous like an infant's mind. Thanks Daverupa. I wonder if I am also overreacting to a few moments that ...
