A Buddhist Rap by Yours Truly

Hey all, So I wrote my first Buddhist rap and posted it on ES a few years ago. Unfortunately, because I'm an idiot and didn't save a copy, it got lost with everything else on the site... So here's another. And I did remember to save this one  I haven't yet thought of an appropriate ...

Re: Overcoming Guilt

Hello all, Wow, thanks so much for all the wonderful advice. I will try to start looking at the flashbacks and guilty feelings as motivation to do more good and never again reproduce such actions. I will also try hard to bring mindfulness to the fore. Cooran, those links were of tremendous help. Tha...

Overcoming Guilt

Hello Everyone, Are there any sutta references, teachings or general advice for overcoming guilt and/or forgiving oneself? This pertains to me. I have been forgiven by those I harmed, but I can't seem to shake the guilt. Thoughts of my actions haunt me everyday - the aversion to them is physical as ...

Re: Meditation without timers

? I am the original poster. I started the thread to get advice on how to meditate w/o a timer, but I actually ended up getting advice encouraging me to find something to use as a timer, which was great advice because I'm no good at sitting without a timer. I would most likely stop too early. I now h...

Re: Meditation without timers

Hey all, Been a while since I viewed this thread. I now have a cell phone with internet that can also download and play web content, so I've downloaded a couple bell timers from the Gil Fronsdal site (http://www.insightmeditationcenter.org/meditation-timers/" onclick="window.open(this.href...

Re: How to answer the morality question?

The Buddha never taught that "all is illusion." He taught that there is a mundane truth - that time and space appears to exists as we know it - but that this perception is due to ignorance of the supramundane truth - that ultimately the self is simply a functional illusion and cannot actua...

Thanks, Ben! I love this place and I'm happy to be able to frequent it again.

Ahh, genkaku, I remember him. Very cool.

BTN Documentary on American Buddhist Practice

Hey folks, long time no talk :hello: Hope everyone is well. Just watched the second part of a two-part documentary on Buddhist practice in American. Couldn't get the first part to work, but the second is full of insightful interviews with popular American teachers. There's even an appearance by a gu...

Re: Meditation without timers

Mikenz: Ah, yes, you're right. I like incense whenever I can get a hold of it, but it does get a bit overwhelming if I burn it inside too much. Zavk: Yeah, I have a cell phone, but I don't have service on it so I don't use it. And somehow I've misplaced my charger for it, so I couldn't even if I wan...

Re: An American Buddhist Tradition

I share your sentiments, Khalil, pretty much completely. Though I'm interested to see what an American-style tradition of Buddhism would look like, I don't think I'm likely to follow it if it ever arises. I feel quite comfortable in the Theravada tradition. One of the things I would like to see, how...

An American Buddhist Tradition

Hello all, This idea was originally introduced by P0int in his thread explaining how he and some others have started a network to establish an American Buddhist temple. After reading the thread again, I concluded that it wasn't clearly stated exactly what he's trying to do - that is, establish an Am...

Re: Meditation without timers

Hmm... not sure what kind of distraction joss sticks would be for me. For me it would be the smell, the possibly toxic fumes, and the worry that my house might burn down... Personally, I prefer to only use incense in well-ventilated, open, non-flammable spaces. This sort of space can be found in so...

Re: Meditation without timers

Hmm... not sure what kind of distraction joss sticks would be for me. Guess I'll only know if I try. I usually meditate with eyes closed since I can't seem to actually keep them open when I try.

Re: Meditation without timers

I do believe there are a couple unused cell phones in the house, though I doubt they're charged. I'll have to see if I can find a charger.

The kitchen timer is a good idea.
