Re: What should be the Buddhist response to tyranny?

To anyone who associates the word "conspiracy" with tinfoil hats I would say to you: "Just because I'm paranoid doesn't mean they're not out to get me". I am not claiming (nor would I claim) that any and all conspiracy theories are true, but I wonder why people find it so hard to...

Dhammaloka Forum

Hi All, I am just advertising (with permission from DhammaWheel staff) for the newly re-opened Dhammaloka Forum. Hopefully in the near future people will be able to speak to Ajahn Brahm and other senior bhikkhu's and bhikkhuni's from the Bodhinyana and Dhammasara monasteries on this forum. Here's th...

Re: Seeing in the New Year - how are you doing it?

I just wrote down some New Years Resolutions and I have every intention of keeping them, I will certainly try my best. They are the usual stuff: exercise more regularly, meditate more regularly, eat healthier.

Tonight I am going to Ajahn Brahm's New Year's Eve Party.

Re: Do you feel good also very good how do you feel?

In regards to the question: Do you have to feel very good before enlightenment comes? I remember hearing that there are four different ways of reaching Nibbana; fast and pleasant, slow and pleasant, fast and painful, slow and painful. Sorry, I don't know the Sutta that this comes from. 1. Is it okay...

Anyone who writes an article entitled "My Awakening" immediately rings alarm bells with me, but maybe that's just me.

Re: How many hours of sleep is ideal for meditation?

At Ajahn Brahm's retreats he tells everyone to sleep as much as they like on the first 2 or 3 days because he recognizes that many lay people are over-worked and fatigued. It is necessary to take care of yourself in order for good meditation to develop. If you feel tired then the quality of your med...

Re: Friendship and love

I like to enjoy the company of my friends while they are around, but, when it is time for them to go their own way and for me to go my own way, I don't miss them.

Re: Acquiring the meditational skills to attain Nibbana

note that enlightenment is not mentioned here. The phrase "if penetrating no higher" could possibly mean "if not realising one of the Four Stages of Enlightenment". Therefore, it could be inferred that it is possible for this practice of Metta bhavana to lead to Nibbana. The Bud...

Re: Acquiring the meditational skills to attain Nibbana

:goodpost: I might add that it is not possible to attain nibbana with only samatha or metta alone. These existed long before the Buddha. Vipassana is essential. with metta RYB I don't think it is possible to attain Nibbana WITHOUT both Samatha and Metta. Samatha and Metta are "the only way&quo...
