Re: What is formless jhanas and how do you practice?
Not that much. You could probably measure it in weeks, or even days. There are more sublime things than sukkha. And how are those sublime things more superior than sukha? Why would anyone prefer them above sukha? Because they've had enough sukkha for the time being and they want to rest in contentm...

Re: What is formless jhanas and how do you practice?
It's similar to the idea that you can have too much chocolate. As much as you like chocolate, if you eat enough of it you will get satiated (perhaps even tired of chocolate) and just want to chill for a while in contentment. Same with sukkha. After you have experienced enough sukkha, you become sat...

Re: What is formless jhanas and how do you practice?
Sounds like clinging to joy and happiness. I never understood this logic It's similar to the idea that you can have too much chocolate. Re: What is formless jhanas and how do you practice?
Hi. Ayya Khema explains how to attain the four immaterial jhanas in this dhamma talk: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P4iGguaz7yA&list=PL5KY1oX_dFovM9Uop2F7juQPe0YFT55Od&index=15 Ayya Khema teaches with a clarity that I really appreciate. If you like her way of teaching I highly recommend li...

Re: Leigh Brasington's Jhana-practice
If it works for you then great and apply it. Whatever you do don't spend too much time on this forum discussing about it or getting others opinions on Leigh, it could just be a hindrance and set you back. I can't help you much other than to encourage you and say that I believe his teacher Ayya Khem...

Re: Leigh Brasington's Jhana-practice
Dear Sangha, So I've been looking to regain my concentration after just doing mahasi-meditation for eight months. I find it somewhat dry and my mind is scattered. I started doing anapanasati and then complemented it with leigh brasingtons jhanas. I'm not looking to start a discussion about lite and...

Re: Stream entry a poor goal
There's a less imposing interpretation of the faith of the stream winner. I have heard some teacher describe it as "verified confidence" in the dhamma (I don't remember who it was). The idea is basically this: if you experience jhana, then you believe it exists. You have verified confidenc...

Re: How to eliminate self view and rites/rituals?
:anjali: Those are two of the fetters that are eliminated at stream entry. So one answer would be practice the noble eightfold path and develop the 37 factors of awakening. More to the point, there really is no way to eliminate those specific things without practicing the dhamma up to stream entry....

Funny Dhamma Teachers?
Hi.
Do you know any funny dhamma teachers you can recommend?
I know Ajahn Brahm tells jokes in his dhamma talks but it's not my kind of humour.
I'd appreciate your recommendations.

Why don't science accept consciousness? I think you meant to say, "Why doesn't science accept consciousness?" I can't take a thread seriously that can't or doesn't bother to write the title correctly. Have you considered SarathW might not be speak english as a first language? He might be ...

Re: INCREDIBLE - Suttas are now in audio format on Youtube!
Wow, that's great. Are they free or do they have some ridiculous price? In writing format they cost 200$, even the online version that costs nothing to produce. Good thing I have them pirated. 200$ is a minimum wage over here in eastern europe and that's if you live in the good part of eastern euro...

Re: Why don't science accept consciousness?
Ok, then this refers to your professional background which obviously does not satisfy you wholly due to psychological reasons which is why you turn to what you call "spiritual". That doesn't necessarily cause conflict as long you manage to keep the profession (the craft of science) and yo...

Re: Why don't science accept consciousness?
 The funny thing is that you call science "dogmatism" although it is based exclusively on the perceptually evident independent of beliefs. The scientific method is the scientific method: 1. hypothesis that can be experimentally tested -> 2. test (experiment) -> 3. rejection or confir...

Re: Why don't science accept consciousness?
 Scientific evidence is independent of beliefs. -> https://www.dhammawheel.com/viewtopic.php?p=669557#p669557 From a scientific perspective an explanation is "enough" only if it is a scientific hypothesis supported by experimental evidence and thus is a valid theory. However a scient...
