Re: Is there an order I should be studying this material?
Personally, I'd start with In The Buddha's Words" as it addresses the Sutas and the Pali Canon.

Re: amitabha buddha
That statue is a wonderful Buddha - lots of character in the pose, weathering, patina, etc.
I believe anyone would be happy to display it on their altar.

Re: How do I read The Tibetan Book of the Dead?
Although the tradition I follow is Theravada, I read the Book of the Dead just out of curiosity. As pointed out, it's not a text for those outside Tibetan Buddhism, as it relates to very specific deities, rituals, etc. That being said, I did find some wonderful quotes throughout the book. One in par...

Re: When someone asks what it takes to become a Buddhist...
What harm could befall telling others about taking refuge and taking up the precepts? As I see it... none. Certainly every other religion is openly free with information needed to enter into, and participate in their chosen religion, faith, philosophy, etc. I view this as right speech and right int...

My contention is, that irrespective of what tradition or lineage you follow, at its core, villkorkarma wrote:How can that have so much effect on us, his teaching.?
Buddhism presents a pure, no-nonsense, time-tested path to a righteous, moral life.
To me, that's a huge effect.

Re: Where to start?!
Or you could go for (IMO) the simplest presentation of original teachings, the Dhammapada http://www.accesstoinsight.org/tipitaka/kn/dhp/dhp.intro.budd.html (the alternate translation linked at the top of the page is just as good but more poetic - take your pick). :namaste: Kim Agree. Available as ...

Buddha... yeah, there's an app for that!
I hope this fits into the "modern world" category. I discovered a Buddhism app for my iPhone 4 on the iTunes app store... free . It's called "Buddha Word" and I assumed it would just be a bunch of quotes. I happily discovered it is actually The Dhammapada. No citation as to which...

Re: Thread bumping
The forum software can be set to purge out threads which have not been replied to after a certain amount of time has passed. That might be appropriate on some boards, where the information might be only of fleeting interest, but in my opinion it would be disastrous on a board like this, where part ...

Re: Thread bumping
A suggestion from my experience running a couple of forum boards: The forum software
can be set to purge out threads which have not been replied to after a certain amount of time
has passed.
It's automatic and therefore would not require any rules which may or may not be adhered to.
