Re: covid vaccine: yea or nay?

Yes. I got my first dose of the Pfizer vaccine some time last week. Felt a little tired that afternoon and the injection site was sore for 2 or 3 days. That was the extent of the side effects for me; they were virtually identical to what I experience with the yearly flu vaccine. I'm glad and gratefu...

Re: addicted to energy drinks

Some years ago, I drank energy drinks for a month or two, two a day at most, before I started experiencing heart palpitations and short bouts of irregular heart rhythm. I quickly stopped drinking them. I've never had an irregular heart rhythm from anything else in my life, including copious amounts...

Re: Buddhism: just another "truth"?

Hello, I’ve been having doubts lately about buddhist teachings, whether in written form or in talks given by monks. I feel that as soon as the topic discussed goes beyond the limits of "mundane" comprehension and goes on to describe things that mere mortals can only accept on faith, the d...

Re: Realms, metaphor vs reality

I don't think I have an issue with the idea that "our minds wandering through [the ten realms] freely as we become the mindsets associated with those realms" or describing rebirth as "the reinvention of the mind in the ten realms." I definitely think that a person experiencing g...

Re: Keeping muscles strong?

I've read about Ajahn Sumedho using a rowing machine very regularly - I'd be impressed if he still does at his age! I've seen the treadmill in Ajahn Pasanno's "office" and I vaguely recall him talking about using it. Those are two examples of monks of many vassas "working out." T...

Re: Throwing away food in water with no bacteria in it

Point well taken......especially considering that it seems likely that since they don't deficate then the dyspepsia would last the rest of their life.....and it seems like some devas live a very very very long time. I never get dyspepsia myself, but I gather from those who do that it often causes a...

Re: How did historical Buddha looked like?

Wow, that sounds like a lot, especially the patimokkha - are you saying that a monk or nun would have to learn both the bhikkhu and bhikkhuni patimokkha or just their respective gender's version? And to your knowledge, are these standards commonly followed?

Re: How did historical Buddha looked like?

[...]while those with very little mnemonic skill (e.g., men ordained in old age) would memorize only the handful of texts that a monk was required to know before he could be relieved of the obligation to live with a teacher. Hi Bhante, What is that handful of texts? I'm guessing it has to remembere...

Re: Darwinism and the Dhamma

There is a passage in the Dakkhiṇavibhaṅga Sutta comparing the value of gifts. One could use this passage to infer the relative demerit of killing an animal to killing a human-being of poor moral character (e.g. a burglar), or killing an ordinary moral person, a non-Buddhist attainer of jhāna, one ...
