Wut? Sure they have. Or do you mean ordaining Korean monks in the Theravada tradition with the official consent of the Sangha Supreme Council of Thailand?Caodemarte wrote: ↑Sat Oct 26, 2019 1:11 am I don’t believe anyone has tried a foreign ordination ceremony again.

Re: Body Odor stinks to high heaven
Before deodorant became common in the 1800s, body odor was a thing which people didn't bother about, and many people washed just a couple of times a year, or once a month.
It's a modern conceit that we shouldn't be smelling the body. It's natural. Just like animals, we smell.

Re: vision in breathing meditation
When i was getting horrible visions during a long meditation retreat, (lots of zombies and vomit and blood and knives and murder), the Burmese Sayadaw told me to stop paying attention to the visions and strongly return to the sensation of breathing.
That fixed it really quickly.

Re: Can I take some pain killers when I do meditation?
Ajahn Brahm joked; the best meditation to stop a headache is Panadol meditation.
Also, long term, try different postures which may stop your back pain in meditation.
There's no rule saying you have to meditate sitting upright. Just a posture that keeps you awake but comfortable.

Re: Brahmachariya
When i was a monk. It was TERRIBLE! So difficult. Even Ajahn Chah said he was tortured by his lust as a monk. He said sexual urges were among the last desires to fade. One time when he was a monk, he had to move to a hut where nobody could see him on his walking meditation path, because he'd walk al...

Do that, and even if it is anonymous, the reported people will find out who reported them. From then on, the person who reported them will be blacklisted. Nobody likes whistleblowers. But sometimes you got to burn your bridges, to do the right thing. If a monastery can't be based on honesty and res...

Re: The Path of Purification by Buddhaghosa
Don't start with it. Read it after you've read the actual suttas. But yeah parts of it are really useful, especially for meditation.
One famously controversial part is the formulation and definition for Jhana. It's different and more difficult from what is in the Suttas.

Thankyou Mikenz, you've been an excellent moderator. Heavy water definitely, perhaps even graphite.

Re: Power and Oppression in Western Monasteries
If the abbot has a senior above him, somewhere, it might be worthwhile to send a letter telling what's going on at the monastery. Or if it's part of the Ajahn Chah wat pah pong sangha, contact some senior from that organisation and tell them what's happening. If it's an independent monastery that wo...

Re: Power and Oppression in Western Monasteries
These people tend to be either elderly, have personality disorders, or are disabled in other ways. These people aren't "volunteering" in the same sense because they often have no other choice. I am not one of these people but it's something that doesn't sit right with me. Ah I see now. So...

Re: Power and Oppression in Western Monasteries
I'm troubled by the negative reactions this post has already caused and I am dubious about saying anything further. I may delete the post. Don't delete it, it's a real issue which should be talked about. You're serving the dhamma by airing out the dirty laundry. And you're anonymous and so is the m...

Re: Power and Oppression in Western Monasteries
I'm looking for similar experiences, and advice about how to deal with the situation. Yes, I've have very similar experiences, and they've been solved/mitigated by me taking responsibility for my own safety and well-being, if the sangha is not going to. # For instance I was asked to paint the rafte...

Re: Why is all Buddhist scripture including Theravada so vast?
One reason is the Buddha taught basically full-time for 45 years after he got enlightened. That's a lot of talks to record. There are several other reasons too, but I'll leave those to other people to explain. One is what Keith says above; if all the repetition and duplication was ruthlessly removed...
