Re: Is Theravada "Realist"?
In CMA for every one moment of rūpa, 16-17 processes of citta occur. So they are not totally equivalent. Correct and this actually strengthens my point. The Atthassalini says time is mind. So the change of rupa is imposed on it due to cittas activities, the same goes for the maturation of past acti...

Re: Is Theravada "Realist"?
As I understand it, Abhidhamma (or at least CMA that I've read) does accept rūpa independent of consciousness, mind or mentality. Not really. Theravada is present-only and ksanikavada so rupas can only show up "now", with "now" being directly caused by the presence of a citta. O...

Re: Shakyamuni
As you know, the historical Buddha is usually called Shakyamuni in the Mahayana Sutras and by Mahayana practitioners. In the old Pali Dictionary Abhidhanappadipika we can find 39 names and titles of the Buddha. Sakyamuni is one of those. These 39 names and titles occur in the Pali texts - some of t...

Re: Can there be no manasikāra?
Manasikara is one of the universal cetasikas arising with every citta. Check f.e. van Gorkoms "Cetasikas" chapter 7.Is it possible for there to be moments of no manasikāra during waking hours?

So when you bake a cake and then eat it that means that you never had eggs and milk? No, my view is: since vedana necessarily is part of the avenue leading to dukkha an arhat cannot experience vedana.

Re: Is everything Suffering?
What the sutta actually says is "And is it fitting to regard what is inconstant, stressful, subject to change as: 'This is mine. This is my self. This is what I am'?" So the Buddha is saying that aggregates are not fit to be "owned" because they are inconstant and therefore stre...

Re: Did the buddha continue to practice meditation?
According to my understanding vedana is a necessary condition for dukkha but the term "vedana" simply is not applicable in a context where cessation of dukkha is complete. Dont forget there are two kinds of Nibbana. :broke: Could you give the meaning of "tajjo samanaharo"? I 2nd...

Re: What's mind consciousness and why it's a magic show?
How can there be a citta beyond the aggregates? Well we can read the following passages and find it answers questions or gives rise to new ones. Probably gives rise to new ones. "'Consciousness without surface, endless, radiant all around, has not been experienced through the earthness...

Re: Is everything Suffering?
Regarding the Dhammapáda passage, to understand sankhárá as "conditioned things", only makes the final couplet redundant. Sabbe dhammá anattá are so, because they are the "conditioned things", not the sankhárá that condition (or determine) them. There are two groups of dharmas, ...

Re: 5 or 6 Sense Pleasures?
Are there 5 or 6 sense pleasures that are discouraged? If there are 6, what should we shun in terms of mental sense pleasures? There are five strings of sensuality in the suttas and accordingly there are five types of sensual-desire (kama-chanda) connected with five sense-consciousnesses. Kama in t...

Re: Is Goodwill Really Possible for Long?
Is the practice of universal goodwill really possible for long? The Dhamma says to love enemies, neutral persons, dear persons, and yourself equally such that if one were to be caught by criminals who make you choose to sacrifice one of the 4, one would not hand anyone not even yourself. Life is ch...

Yes, but what source does Gach reference? :anjali: Mike "The Buddha" ...small as a hair tip contains millions of Buddha realms, each containing bazillions of subatomic Buddha realms, each a perfect pure land.) Fantastic. Yet the Buddha said: As a net is made up of a series of ties, so eve...
