Re: My view of anatta. By samsarictravelling/Ai (Dinh) Le.

Greetings, You will find no support in the scriptures for blind faith or forced intellectual conformity either. The strength of faith, is the strength of one's spirituality. In this Dhamma, faith and wisdom need to be balanced through mindfulness. Now, let's return to the topic at hand... Metta, Pau...

Non sequitur. You will find no support in the scriptures for blind faith or forced intellectual conformity either.

Re: Has Thanisarro ever mentioned Nanavira?

Greetings, Interesting! Not that I care “who” these senior western monks are nor does it really matter, but i think it’s fair and appropriate to ask “why”, yes? As for the "why", I think SDC's response immediately above your own, is a brilliant explanation. There's a tendency when one's approach dev...

Re: Did meditation really "die out" ?

Greetings,

I have suspicions that this may relate to the hagiography and mythology of the Burmese Vipassana Tradition.

After all, it's much easier to make it seem like U rescued Buddhist meditation if you can paint a dire picture of what it looked like before your arrival.

Paul. :)

Re: Is Papanca always unwholesome?

Greetings Sarath, Is Papanca always unwholesome? As I see it, papanca is always not vipassana, but any samatha practice that involves a degree of creative thinking and imagination, such as metta-bhavana, could potentially involve papanca in its early stages. However, I suspect that that which has no...

Do you disagree then with the distinction between atta (self) and atman (soul) made here?

Re: consciousness, a magic trick ?

Greetings,

I think you will find benefit in reading the prologue to ven. Nanananda's "Magic Of The Mind", which gives a very good sense of the kind of "magic trick" that might be referred to here.

Paul. :)

Re: THERE'S NO SELF: a sutta says

Greetings DooDoot, One can never be sure what Buddhadasa said and what the translator has said.... Indeed, it is challenging when there are extra layers of translations, with extra opportunity for the message to be inadvertently skewed. ...but its seems for SN 12.15 Buddhadasa translated atthi & nat...

Re: "There's no self": a sutta says

Greetings Circle5, Respectfully, you clearly do not know what my argument is, nor the reasons for it, so regardless of your intentions, you are simply shadowboxing. For whatever reason (and I'm endeavouring to politely refrain from articulating what I think it might be), you're resolved on your "att...

Re: Breaking News! Theravada down on Original Buddhism rankings

Greetings rightviewftw, Please do not compare or equate the TOS to the guidelines set by the Buddha. The Buddha has already set the appropriate standards, what you have here is nowhere close to optimal guidelines for discussion of the Dhamma. Every house has its own house rules. If you wish to be in...

Re: Breaking News! Theravada down on Original Buddhism rankings

Greetings, If these are not followed it leads to disruption, discord and decline. I agree on this point, but do not necessarily agree with this... A lot more people would be arriving at a proper understanding and alignment. ... because invariably people are attached to their views. As the Buddha sai...

Re: DN31 Advise to Sigalaka

Greetings, Fair points have been made vis-a-vis DN31 and the Dhamma, but there's also a little bit too much in the way of irrelevant conjecture about one another. Out of respect to the OP, one another, and the sutta in question, please try to desist from making this topic about one another. :thanks:...

Re: THERE'S NO SELF: a sutta says

Greetings Manopubbangama, I thought we don't have to have our Buddhism be about sutta-fundamentalism? Non-sequitur. If someone is going to be bold enough to claim to represent the Buddha's logic and reasoning, it's reasonable to ask them to substantiate it. Especially so when they also make referenc...

Re: THERE'S NO SELF: a sutta says

Greetings Circle5, So you agree with the Buddha that claiming inconstant feeling, inconstant perceptions, inconstant form, etc. can not be said not to exist, because we can notice their arising? Please show us a sutta that demonstrates he says they cannot be said to exist because we can notice their...
