Re: Would you sacrifice one man to save five?
Understood. But there's still a way it could be relevant: You are trying to decide who to vote for president or Prime Minister (if applicable). One candidate wants to invade a leader who has WMD and this time there is real intelligence and proof that this other leader will use them. The other candi...

Re: Overcoming sexual desire in the hypersexualized modern culture
What methods have people actually used to achieve success in reducing or overcoming sensual lust? I'm not talking about theory or just Pali suttas on the subject but the experiences of 4 hours of meditation per day. It virtually disappeared. :meditate: I believe meditative progress particularly tow...

Re: Would you sacrifice one man to save five?
That would be relevant for a president or an army general yes. But how many Buddhists have that occupation? I never would, so even then it would still be irrelevant. Understood. But there's still a way it could be relevant: You are trying to decide who to vote for president or Prime Ministe...

Re: Would you sacrifice one man to save five?
As a Buddhist how do you address this delima? It doesn't matter because you would never need to because it's not real and never will be. Actually, there are some real life scenarios, at macro level anyway. For example, when GW Bush claimed that Sadaam Hussein had WMD and we need to stop him...

Re: Would you sacrifice one man to save five?
Where is the option to save everyone? In this scenario, that's not considered an option; you have to choose to either flip the switch or not to flip the switch. I know, but if 4, 5, and 6 are options, then save everyone should also be option! As a Buddhist how do you addr...

Re: Will the energy crisis push people to become vegetarians?
It depends on what is meant by "energy crisis". Many people already consider the over reliance on unsustainable animal agriculture, and it's excessive contribution to climate change, to already be an energy crisis and it already has pushed people to become vegetarian.

"With his mind thus concentrated, purified, and bright, unblemished, free from defects, pliant, malleable, steady, and attained to imperturbability, he directs and inclines it to creating a mind-made body. From this body he creates another body, endowed with form, made of the mind, complete in...

Re: Is owning a diner wrong livelihood?
Greetings, The commentary shared above by Bhikkhu Pesala suggests that even selling alcohol is fine, so long as you didn't make it yourself... so keep the homebrew off the menu, and you're good to go! :toast: Metta, Paul. :) So owning and operating a liquor store is not wrong livelihood? I find tha...

Re: What is the possible behavior of a Anagami lay Buddhist?
How can one be happy to be involved with social activities when he masters the jhanas of renunciation and have no desire at all about sensuality? Due to pure compassion and Karuna? Is it possible? It would be interesting to know if some of those problems are considered in the canon. That depends on...

I don't think that increasing your own level of dedication to the practice, even if only temporarily, can ever be considered disrespectful. Quite the opposite.

Re: If you become a Sotapanna will you know that?
IMHO, if thousands/millions of people practice the Dhamma and don't attain results, then it looks like something is really really wrong. It would be impossible to not attain results practicing the Dhamma, as that would render the notion of kamma just wrong and the Buddha's teaching on kamma is not ...

Re: If you become a Sotapanna will you know that?
1)It is frustrating that even a prominent monk such as him is not a Sotapanna yet. Why would another persons practice be frustrating to one's own? IMHO, if thousands/millions of people practice the Dhamma and don't attain results, then it looks like something is really really wrong. It would be imp...

Re: Survival and Cannibalism
Umm, feeding the body is reason to kill. Feeding ones family. Protecting ones family. All reasons to kill. If one wants to make this bad kamma then they can. Or they can be in joy while fishing and harvesting meat. I also heat some with wood. I kill living trees to harvest for firewood. I have to l...

Re: Survival and Cannibalism
A monastic is to be training 24/7. They must follow the training rules. I must follow the training rules when on retreat also as I’m signed up as a renunciant. You abstain from doing certain actions in order to train. When you go back to laylife you are not under these same rules. You can by all me...
