Re: where did the mahayana come from

For a start, the development of Mahayana was never a single movement or one event thingy as portrayed by some in this thread. It was a group of reactionary movements that span over centuries. So, the causes for the rising of Mahayana are numerous although they carry a similar motivation.

Can/Would an Arahant Cry?
Yes, Arahant are still humans after all and as a result of their compassion arising from their enlightened state.

Re: mind "inherently pure"?

All three made reference to the (I'm paraphrasing here due to the aforementioned stupidity) "inherent" or "natural" or "original" state of the mind as being pure and radiant. I had been going on the assumption that, from a Theravada point of view, there was no "in...

Re: Question about jhana

I was reading about the jhanas and have a vague memory, reading that one should develop jhanas in order, such that one can remain in one fully as long as one wants, before moving onto the next. Is this true? Devas/Brahmas of the form and formless realms can stay in the state of Jhanas for aeons and...

Re: Store consciousness in Theravada

I see Yogacara as a major attempt to bridge the abhidharmas of the early Buddhist schools and later Mahayana sutras in order to increase the authenticity of the latter in the eyes of Buddhists.

Re: Women can't become Buddhas?

Besides, gender equality is a rare occurrence. Rarely are females being treated as equal in the history of humans Gender equality in premodern societies wasn't as rare as was once thought. We know know that in many premodern societies women and men had different roles and contributed differently to...

Re: Partless particles and moments

Actually modern science already reveal the fact that there is no such things as partless particles joining together as one , the notion of a physical object is nothing more than countless of dotlike particles surrounding by vast empty space while interacting with each other using electromagnetic for...

Re: Why there is no re-linking consciousness

In Mahavihara or Sri Lankan Buddhism, which appears rooted in the teachings of Buddhaghosa and the commentaries, there is the notion of relinking consciousness within the cycle of dependent origination. This is similar to Tibetan notions of the 'bardo'. The last time I check, bardo means "inte...

Re: Is there a chance that we are Devas in Sagga?

It occurs to me that the existence many of us lead in this technologically advanced world could seem like we are Devas and this is heaven. Imagine telling someone 2,500 years ago that you can travel 600 miles in one hour. Or that you can speak and hear someone on the other side of the planet. That ...

Re: Women can't become Buddhas?

Thats my speculation until you can give us an example of a Buddha being born in the times where female is held to be greater than or equal to their male counterpart. Your rhetoric is simply useless. when the dhamma is lost completely Not really, given that Buddha treated female much better than any ...

Rarely are females being treated as equal in the history of humans, even in many countries today, notable outside the West, women are clearly not viewed or treated as equal and its doubtful such practices will sustain in the future if mankind returns to...

Re: Women can't be enlightened?

And specifically for the Mahayana, women can't vow to save all beings - because they literally can't save all beings. They have to first hope to be reborn as a male and then make the vow. That is quite wrong. In Mahayana, its pretty common for female devotees to take the Bodhisattva vows. One can s...
