Wondering how you would answer that question if presented by a friend who was not Buddhist.
Have to admit, I can't. Any ideas on this?
No life is innocent, or guilty.

Re: What's the point?

I try being generous and kind and I just get stepped on by people. What's the point in being kind when people will just cut you down? Is there even a meaning to our existence? Sorry for the rant I just had a bad day and could really use some good advice. The only true kindness has no point. A...

Re: cause of depression

Great link, thanks. I'm curious: what's the glutamate issue? How does glutamate in diet affect depression? What foods contain glutamate such that they be avoided? http://link.springer.com/article/10.1007%2FBF00345492?LI=true#page-1 http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2012/11/121113134807.htm http:...

Re: cause of depression

All I know is, we managed to land on the moon many years back but our well supported scientific community hasn't been able to still find an actually lasting and long-term-effective treatment to one of the most common psychological problems today - which is depression. Yes, I am sour. :tantrum: Ther...

Re: cause of depression

hi, When i suffer depression it's usually because of unwise attention and lack of mindfulness. I am either caught up in a destructive or negative thought pattern and lack the awareness to take one step back to assess things. Depression can sometimes feel too overwhelming that i can't really practic...

Re: Please Kick My Legs Out From Under Me!

Sat for two hours at the Won Buddhist meditation hall. It was just what I needed, a place not my home and conducive to meditation. Sat right down, but wow that was good in that it was hard. Pain, monkey mind....sheesh, feels like I am starting from scratch. Going to a Tai Chi session there tonight a...

Re: Please Kick My Legs Out From Under Me!

Thanks for all your replies, many of them fall short with me however. This is not a beginner's problem I feel. I used to have the urgency, but I have seen too much and it has dissipated since death is something different to me now. I have been practicing on and off for a long time and I am having a ...

afraid of looking like people I think I do not like This is intriguing. What does such a one look like? Ha, yes, I think this is at the heart of what is stopping me. They look insincere, not that I know they are, but they look like they are all ego. Just do a google image search on "meditate" and t...

Re: Please Kick My Legs Out From Under Me!

Hello cb, It is important to have regular contact with others on the Path. Try to find a group that meets weekly. When you form friendships with other practising buddhists, attend teachings and go on short retreats (10 days) with an accredited teacher, things will improve. Leave any expectations be...

Re: Please Kick My Legs Out From Under Me!

F*ck it! Buddhism is chill! Now go meditate. Maybe you could consider going camping in the woods by yourself for a couple weeks and try to kickstart your meditation practice out there. :anjali: Yes, being alone has been on my mind and was looking for a place today. Need to be away from the grabby w...

Please Kick My Legs Out From Under Me!

Yes, having a hard time getting my meditation practice going again. I had a "f*** it, Buddhism is stupid" moment about a year ago and I stopped all practice and got rid of all my books. It was a good break and in itself it gave me some valuable insights but my mind is left feeling sloppy. Now I am h...

Re: What Do I Do?! (Post 4-month retreat)

I have no idea what to do with my life. Work? Get a girlfriend? Do yoga? Read books? Watch movies? All this seems like samsara, but ordination is out of the question right now due to the health issue.... I have no idea. I am 24. Completely lost in life. Meditating during retreats is easy. Meditatin...

Re: cause of depression

The fact that meditation rids depressive symptoms is just a side effect of practice. So "side effects" and "cures" are mutually exclusive? Maybe to word it differently...one needs to make curing depression a side effect of practice and not the goal. edited to add this link I ran across today: http:...
