Re: Key component missing? Does the wheel turn smoothly with

I am interested in hearing the experiences of others in regards to this matter. Who here has successfully rid oneself of their hindrances by the intense, one-pointed concentration practices of Samatha and Vipassana in a mindful manner? How does your experience apply to the teachings of Vimalaramsi?...

Re: the great vegetarian debate

I think you do not understand what I am saying, if you did you would not think that I have forgotten that there is a precept involving killing. I think you should consider whether you should be declaring who is and who is not a serious practitioner of Buddhism. Your statement disenfranchises 90% of...

Re: Thanissaro's view of nibbana

The pantheistic view Other teachers have argued, including Thanissaro Bhikkhu that the being or Mind (Pali: Citta) entering the state of Nibbana is like a "fire unbound." In the Sutta quoted above, the Buddha talks about a fire that goes out and asks "where did it go" and then r...

Re: the great vegetarian debate

When you say that this is not something that you would suggest are you saying that if a person goes to a market and buys a live chicken and the seller kills the chicken and one has some 'negative' reaction that one should not be mindful of that negative reaction and try to use that experience to un...

Re: Anicca and Stable Atoms.

Its not so bad as you think. If it was, Hinduism would not be flourishing in India today. When I mentioned caste in my earlier post , Hindus (generally speaking) even today do not marry outside their caste. Also Hindus do have an inherent superiority/inferiority complex among their castes. That is ...

Please don't worry about that. I doubt that anyone would be hurt about whether the atoms are stable or not, nor I think they should be.

There are more important things... such as pointing out the suffering within the castes in India.

Re: Anicca and Stable Atoms.

Hi Indian Buddhist, I think it is a mistake to try move the Buddha's teachings beyond the scope of their practices. (Or outside of "the All," as described within the context of the teaching, quoted above.) Also, in Anuradha Sutta (SN 22.86) the Buddha said that it was only dukkha that he d...

Re: the great vegetarian debate

Are you saying that if one witnesses a chicken's death that if one uses this experience to study one's aversions that this is perverse or are you saying that maintaining equanimity even when a chicken dies is perverse?.........or both?......or something else? Hi Chownah, I'm sorry for the confusion...

Re: Defilements vs purity

I would rather explain it in the way that defilements aren't necessary requirements for the mind to arise. The mind can arise kind of "pure" or along with defilements dependent on conditions. I don't think one can erase defilements without cessation of the respective defiled mind. But whe...

Re: the great vegetarian debate

In rural India, if you go to the market to buy chicken, they take a live one and slit its throat in front of you while holding down the struggling, writhing animal in its death throes. Gives you an overwhelming moral reason not to buy chicken. I guess it must not be overwhelming for a lot of people...

Re: Question abt Khandhas (abt Consciousness)

I was trying to explore the functional difference between the feeling-perception-consciousness on the one hand, and formations on the other. Perhaps it's analogous to the distinction in an organisation between front-line and back office functions? I don't think they're quite separate like that. &qu...

Re: I am a "buddha"

Your world will contain as many objects as you need it to. First you separated yourself from the world to create yourself. Then you looked at what was left and divided it into the words of your dictionary. Hi GBen, This seems to be very similar to paticca-samuppada (or the dependent arising). More ...

Re: Question abt Khandhas (abt Consciousness)

Avijja (Ignorance) is the root of the problem From Avijja arises Mental Formations (Mental Kamma) From Mental Formations arises Defiled Perceptions and Defiled Consciousness. I think this is how the mind should be trained. First develop Wisdom which cuts the process of formation of Mental Kamma/Def...
