Re: Does negative thinking matter?
This is what the Buddha had to say: “Bhikkhus, whatever a bhikkhu frequently thinks and ponders upon, that will become the inclination of his mind. If he frequently thinks and ponders upon thoughts of renunciation, he has abandoned the thought of sensual desire to cultivate the thought of renunciati...

Re: Ajahn Amaro guided meditation
This video is not meant to be stand alone in relation to his other talks and meditation instructions just like the satipathanna sutta is not mean to be isolated from the rest of the teachings in the Canon. Ajahn Amaro has plenty of guided metta meditations online. Watch them inconjunction with this ...

Re: Eyes Open Or Closed During Practice?
Both are viable practices. I generally close my eyes but will open them if I notice I'm starting to get drowsy. If you sit with your eyes open you will find that when you reach a certain level of Samadhi that the eyes will naturally close on there own. :namaste: For me, that is a different reason f...

Re: Stillness Flowing - new biography of Ajahn Chah
I received my book a few days ago in the mail. What an absolutely amazing book! I thought that I had known all there is to know about this legendary monk and his teachings but I was wrong. This book is incredibly detailed in not only Laung Por's life and experiences but also the history of Buddhism...

Re: Critiquing the life of Stephen Hawking
How unfortunate that someone would criticize another for not holding a Buddhist belief system but yet does not follow them himself. 252. Easily seen is the fault of others, but one's own fault is difficult to see. Like chaff one winnows another's faults, but hides one's own, even as a crafty fowler ...

Hi No-mind
I don't normally recommend the Visuddhimagga to anyone because of the denseness and complexity of it but in this case I will as it will answer all of your questions above.

Re: RIP Stephen Hawking
I don't think we should praise him because he was famous & well-liked & is now dead. I think you should not praise him if you see nothing to praise in him. Other people find things to praise about him and this thread is a place where they have come to remember him and to mention those things which ...

Re: Sleeping pill every night
Sleeping pills actually cause insomnia, and over time they will damage your liver. I have taken a prescribed sleeping pill for years now and just had an annual check up and my liver enzymes are fine. I sleep great. :namaste: That doesn't mean in the long run you won't encounter side effects which c...

As far as material possessions, my Dhamma books. I have collected probably close to 200 books. The bookshelf pictured here are my sutta collections and books in the Thai Forest Tradition. The rest boxed up consist of commentaries, Mahasi, Goenka, western Dhamma teachers and Zen books. FB_IMG_152033...
