Re: Buddhism and alcohol

Yes get professional help. Also try and meditate everyday if possible. This will train your mind to just observe the craving arise and pass away without acting on it. You may only be able to observe the craving for a minute or two to start with, but that's OK. The more you meditate the stronger you...

Re: Ajahn Brahm and the strange bottles of Pepsi!

Or just a strange coincidence and nothing more. :namaste: But was the story intended as one depicting a serendipitous situation or to hint that Devas sent him Pepsi. :namaste: I guess the only way to really know would be to ask the author himself. Devas are said to help monks out occasional...

Re: Ajahn Brahm and the strange bottles of Pepsi!

I admire Ajahn Brahm a lot but can make no sense of this passage - During his tudong months he visited many of the most famous meditation masters, including Ajahn Tate and Ajahn Maha Boowa. Ajahn Brahm had a special affinity for Ajahn Tate and he found him to be one of the most selfless (in the hig...

Re: Edit option disappearing

Hi No Mind

The mod team realised that the previous time limit on editing had disappeared, so it was reinstated. You have one hour to edit.

After that you can request a change if it is something significant.

Thanks Bodom. That's one of the variations I linked to above of SN 3.8/ Ud 5.1: https://dhammawheel.com/viewtopic.php?f=41&t=31557&start=20#p465428  Mike Sorry Mike missed that somehow. Re: mettā in commentarial tradition (refutation)

This sutta might be of interest to the topic: I have heard that on one occasion the Blessed One was staying near Sāvatthī at Jeta's Grove, Anāthapiṇḍika's monastery. And on that occasion King Pasenadi Kosala had gone with Queen Mallikā to the upper palace. Then he said to her, "Mallikā, is there any...

Re: Mindfulness

Keep this short, very important sutta, in mind: I have heard that on one occasion the Blessed One was living among the Sumbhas. Now there is a Sumbhan town named Sedaka. There the Blessed One addressed the monks, "Monks!" "Yes, lord," the monks responded. The Blessed One said, "Suppose, monks, that ...

Re: Buddhism and alcohol

Whether alcoholism is a disease or not is really not the point. It is what is and is not skillful to say to those struggling with what could broadly be called an addiction or substance abuse problem, and what is and is not right speech from a Buddhist perspective. This isn't a geographic or cultura...

Re: Buddhism and alcohol

In the context of Buddhism, there is also no reason to think that alcoholism is somehow one of those things that are not impermanent; or that when it comes to alcoholism and depression, we must forget about Buddhism and unquestioningly subscribe to the currently popular notions about these things. ...
