Re: Ven. Vimalaramsi on the Abhidhamma & the Visuddhi Magga

but that the story of how the abhidhamma was taught is to be found only in commentarial texts. ... and that the story does not accord with the Buddha's own words that he did not teach with a closed fist (i.e. no secretive teachings given only to exclusive groups) Well, that cannot convince everyone...

Re: Ven. Vimalaramsi on the Abhidhamma & the Visuddhi Magga

Anyway, Bhante Vimalaramsi didn't say that abhidhamma is not mentionned in the sutta pitaka (neither he said it is), but that the story of how the abhidhamma was taught is to be found only in commentarial texts.

Re: Bhante Vimalaramsi on the Abhidhamma & the Visuddhi Magga

"it is a normal part of assessing whether a teacher is right for you." I agree, but I don't think it was the time nor the place to evaluate Bhante Vimalaramsi. You evaluate a teacher when you're about to engage yourself with his teachings. I think it was not necessary to judge him to discu...

Re: Bhante Vimalaramsi on the Abhidhamma & the Visuddhi Magga

Actually he didn't sayed that he could cure aids, but that he knew how to heal himself from aids if he happens to get it (which is still a little strange). However, this is not the subject here. Being wrong/foolish at one time doesn't mean being wrong/foolish all the time. And there is no need to va...

Re: We Are Not Spirits Who Have Aquired Bodies.

It is more likely that these are a by product of brain function during certain conditions, which are then interpreted by us to have some metaphysical significance. There are some stories (I don't know if they're real or not) that cannot be explained by that : like people being able to repeat a conv...

Re: We Are Not Spirits Who Have Aquired Bodies.

This as been one of my wondering (it's still one, but it doesn't spring doubt in me anymore) : are the Near Death Experiences compatibles with the Buddha's teachings ? "People" go out of their body, and then, things like talking to a "being of light" and other stuffs happen to th...

Re: and what of romantic love?

I'm not sure this is what you're looking for, but I've read a really great book that explain so much things about relationships : "On love" by Ajahn Jayasaro. It's a free book, but there is no "clear pdf" on the net (real pdf, not scanned). Someone from dhammawheel scanned it and...

Re: Really *Excellent* Dhamma Talks Online?

I really, really liked "What is Buddhism" by Bhante Vimalaramsi. I almost decided to not listen to it, considering the fact that I have read many thing which introduce buddhism, but I'm glad I eventually did. He is very clear in his explanations about how your mind tricks you every day. ht...

Looking for a sutta (Goenka discourses)

Hi everyone, I'm searching for a sutta I first heard of in a Goenka retreat. Here is a resume : Once there was this man who requested the Buddha to help his father who was reborn in hell, go back to the happy realm. The Buddha agreed and asked the man to throw two (2) jars, one containing honey and ...

I give books

Hi everyone, I have decided to give some books (that I don't use). Some of them are available for free in monasteries, but it could interest people that don't have a chance to go in such places. About the shipping : - I will pay all of it if you live in France - I will only pay the first 5€, and if ...
