Re: urban buddhist monk

Wasn't there a story about Ajahn Chah visiting London, encountering some hostile / violent local, and declaring he would send all his monks to London for training - that it was a real test of equanimity? I may be remembering, I googled to try and find a source and couldn't, but it sticks in my head ...

Re: What will be your last thought in this life?

My first thought on seeing the thread title was: 'probably "oops"' But the question has actually lodged in my brain the last day or so. If I go peacefully and am aware, then I really hope it will be with a sense of calm and of adventure. I will try to do metta. In a catastrophe? Who knows. ...

I love that picture, because it's at the same time so ordinary - normal looking kids and a monk whose robes look a bit wrinkled and who looks completely 'human' - and so full of joy.

Re: Which fetters are you hoping to eliminate in this life?

Fetters: 1. belief in a self (Pali: sakkāya-diṭṭhi) 2. doubt or uncertainty, especially about the teachings (vicikicchā) 3. attachment to rites and rituals (sīlabbata-parāmāso) 4. sensual desire (kāmacchando) 5. ill will (vyāpādo or byāpādo) 6. lust for material existence, lust for material rebirth...

Re: What do you want to do when you're dead?

Aww I thought this was gonna be a sort of 'pick your dream afterlife' thread (kinda like 'design your dream home' or whatever). Possibly I'm on the wrong board right now . . . Anyway, organs etc. to anyone who can use them, and then whatever means of disposing of the rest is cheap and environmentall...

Re: If it helps you, do you care where it comes from?

To an extent I don't care - I am still working my way through Pema Chodron's books, despite being perfectly convinced that Theravada is the best fit for me, because I find them helpful. However I do think some caution is needed. On the one hand, if secular meditation stuff helps people, then great, ...

Personally I don't like the idea of pushing religion on children, however soft and cuddly it may appear.

Re: On associating with the wise

I don't read the advice to 'associate with the wise' as advice to also cut off completely from those we don't consider wise (and it always worries me a bit, making a judgement on other people like that). It's perfectly possible to be friendly with people, socialise with them, but avoid joining in th...

I love this picture: http://www.healtherpeople.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/02/Malala-Yousafzai-and-Muna-011.jpg The girl beside Malala is Fahma Mohamed, who has just led a successful campaign in the UK to raise awareness of FGM, including getting information about it sent to all schools. I just thin...

Re: what happens to people who commit suicide?

Cianna200, I'm glad you were able to post about your feelings here. Sometimes simply being able to say to someone how you're feeling can help a little. My advice . . . would be that Buddhism may well have something to offer, but be gentle with yourself. Attempt only what you can manage without addin...

Re: And therefore, God does not exist!

Binocular I'm slightly confused, sorry - you are looking for arguments FOR the existence of god? But what you linked in the OP is intended as a way of arguing AGAINST the existence of god by spoofing common arguments of the for camp . . .

Re: And therefore, God does not exist!

The OP is definitely satirical, its spoofing common arguments FOR the existence of god . . . presumably with the intent of showing how flimsy they are?

Re: Beginner Questions

My (very general and subjective) impression is 'lineage' has almost a different meaning in Vajrayana and Zen (and is implemented in different ways in those two, as well) to what we might think of in Theravada. Yes, people might be impressed by connections to a certain teacher (e.g. Ajahn Smith studi...

Re: Feeling scared when I read about the good things . . .

... Trading greed for aversion doesn't seem so helpful ... [big cut] ... It seems reasonable that this suggests not only that it isn't worth fastening onto good fabrications and pushing bad ones away, but that similarly it isn't worth pushing good fabrications away or fastening on to bad ones. Abso...

Re: Feeling scared when I read about the good things . . .

I'm revisiting this because I had a thought (it's a rare occurrence :-P ) : One of the things about Buddhism that I didn't need any convincing about was impermanence. In particular, my life the past 8yrs in particular has taught me not to trust the good times and feelings. The other night on the way...

Re: Buddhist View of Animals & Pet Ownership

Is't owing a dog another attachement? I do not mean to say that we should not look after animals in need. Westerners spent too much resourses on pets. We have to kill lot of wild animals to feed pets! I think animals should be living in the jungle. We are very cruel to our pets by way of cutting th...
