Re: Christmas accounts, gifts, thoughts...

Hi Modus.Ponens . . . I'm really sorry you had a rough time. Christmas just seems to bring out the worst sometimes.

Re: choice of two evils?

I agree, sometimes we do have to make difficult choices. But a lot of times when it comes to talking and I find myself being evasive/lying because otherwise I would hurt someone in some way, I did actually have the option of shutting up and not saying anything - if you try to avoid gossip (something...

Re: Christmas accounts, gifts, thoughts...

Congratulations on all your amazing news :-) I got a dehumidifier (extremely useful) I also got some shower gel from my Nan, which wouldn't be a big deal - except she died in November. She was always super organised, and had already given my Mum some cash in September to get everyone a little someth...

Re: Thailands' Tainted Robes

Interesting video.

Using state law to enforce the vinaya seems a little drastic . . . a criminal record for giving in and eating a sandwich at 5pm?

Re: vipassana vs zen

All the instructions I read for zazen and for vipassanna make them sound pretty different in terms of technique. e.g. Zazen - eyes open - counting / Vipassana - eyes closed - following breath (NOTE: massive oversimplification) So I should think it would be pretty confusing to try and mix and match. ...

Re: Positive Teachings/Aspects of (non-Theravada) Buddhism?

I have based my metta practice on the instructions given in this bookI'm not sure how much it will answer your questions, as it is more a practical how-to than a theoretical discussion, but perhaps it may be helpful.

Re: Northern Vietnam Meditation

Hmm, what about retreat centers or similar? Or even day courses, and I'd stay in a hostel nearby?

Northern Vietnam Meditation

I am planning a trip to northern Vietnam next year, and wondered if anyone could recommend any meditation centres for a 2-3 day stay? I am fairly open minded - I don't mind sitting with Mahayana dudes  I know Vietnam isn't the top destination for retreats generally, but I have limited time o...

Re: Have you heard any good dhamma talks on Depression?

Some of us have been trying to assemble a sort of resources thread: Tools for managing depression

It's a bit thin, but there might be something useful in there - and it would be wonderful if you could add anything useful that you find.

Re: Sending metta to the dying?

It seems my Nan has taken a turn for the worse. My parents, and her other son and his wife, are all down with her, and it seems to be a matter of days at most. [Edited to remove lengthy question] The deleted question is no longer relevant - my Mum phoned about half an hour ago to say my Nan has died.

Re: Sending metta to the dying?

I went to see her yesterday - about 6hrs door-to-door each way, but am glad I made the trip, as she was glad to see me. She is clearly ready to die - she keeps saying she wishes she could go to sleep and not wake up. I think all I can do at this point is hope for her to go peacefully. Regarding Ajah...

Re: Sending metta to the dying?

Thanks all - I have read that book of Ajahn Brahm's, and heard his views on grief a few times. It's one of the few points where I disagree with him a bit. I do think sometimes it's helpful to just have a good cry, feel all the emotion, and just live through it.

Re: Sending metta to the dying?

Thank you! Normally when I do metta for others it is for those I will see that day, because I feel it improves my behaviour to them - so sending it long distance is a bit of a change, hence my first question.

Sending metta to the dying?

Hi, My Nan is dying. She is 88, and has had a good life - until she went into hospital about a week ago she was still living independently, going out to the shops and to socials, seeing her neighbours etc. So I am trying not to be too bleak about it. But I am not very 'good' with death - all my fami...
