Re: Essence of the Buddha's teachings?

If you practiced it and realized you might say this. :sage:

And then you may also have compassion with yourself and consider yourself to be like a little child. If this little child wants to pray, hey why not let it pray? If it helps and the child feels better then let it have its way. This may foster your capacity for metta and compassion towards others and...

Re: Buddha can't help

But do you think there are many level of practice? Obviously the self-reliance one is the most advanced and hardest one IMO. Self reliance in the context of knowing the merely dependent arising of the sense of self is the most efficient way. Self reliance in the context of taking the merely depende...

That is actually the main practice in other traditions but it seems to be a general human mode of dealing with certain cicumstances. :sage:

Re: Mahayanists and the historical record

Is the literal word of the Buddha just not that important in Mahayana? What appears as "word of the Buddha" or not arises depending on belief, i.e. consciousness affirming itself. In that there is no difference between Mahayana conditioned consciousness and Theravada conditioned conscious...

Re: Avoiding subject-object modes of perception

Greetings, Spawning once more from the Aggregate? topic... This assumes that subject-object modes of perception are inherently misleading. They are, because they inherently entail an artificial dissection of the two. What there is, is what is present. No need to extrapolate beyond that. What is aff...

Re: Avoiding subject-object modes of perception

How do you, in practice endeavour to avoid discerning experience wrongly as either "I"/"self" (subject) or "mine" (object)? As soon as intention to avoid appears it is recognized and dropped. As soon as intention to follow an ideal of "right" appears it is re...

Is it possible for practising Buddhists to have fun ? I'd be interested in reading other peoples comments about this. Actually buddhism can be great fun, but something that can be fun is not necessarily experienced as fun. E.g. some people can laught about themselves and others can not. Why is this...

Re: What motivates Arahant?

But why can't arahants eat after their enlightenment? Arahant has no perception of " I, me, mine " so how can he know that " I am hungry and I need to eat or I will die ". This is what I wonder. But how can you know what another, arahat or not, is thinking? Who instilled all the...

Re: What motivates Arahant?

Hello all, If Arahant has no self view, no perception of self, no greed, anger or delusion, then why does Arahant eat or do anything? :?: Arahant has no craving to prolong or protect the existence of his body. When Arahant walks somewhere, why does s/he avoid walking off the cliff? Arahant isn't su...
