Re: Why SuttaCentral is so Feminist

Greetings, Don't be a feminist, don't be a (male) chauvinist; be a personist, with concern for all humanity based on the content of their character, not their color, gender, etc. Or... better still, be a beingist ! Whatever living beings there may be; Whether they are weak or strong, omitting none, ...

Re: Nanavira's Works in the US

Greetings, notes on Dhamma? Is that a good start to his work? Yes... Notes On Dhamma is his primary text. Letters is also very insightful. Notes On Dhamma + Letters = Clearing The Path... which was linked to in PDF format above. I can't help you with US sourcing, but I bought my copy of each from th...

Re: Throwing food

Greetings, The question is, is throwing food bad kamma or not? I can think of no reason why throwing away expired food would constitute bad kamma. However, before it becomes inedible, it may be advantageous to give it to another person or creature. I believe there is provision for this in the Vinaya...

Dhp 1 refers to dhammā rather than saṅkhārā.
And all dhammas with the exception of nibbana are sankhata, so your objection is moot.

Re: How did the realisation of Kondañña & other stream-enterers occur?

Greetings DooDoot, I think it lies in the reality that "sabbe sankhara anicca". Sabbe means everything... thus it relates to EVERY-THING! However, at some level many people refuse to open up to and investigate that reality. All sankharas (things) are mind-made in that their shaping, establishment et...

Re: Do we agree that Visuddhimagga is not a reliable source and should not be quoted?

Greetings Sarath, Considering Retro clear this we can discuss whether Visuddhimagga is a useful document and whether it does not agree with Sutta. You can certainly do that here in this topic in General Theravada section, although such discussion would not be permitted in the Classical Theravada sec...

Re: Do we agree that Visuddhimagga is not a reliable source and should not be quoted?

Greetings SarathW, Do we agree that Visuddhimagga is not a reliable source and should not be quoted? This being a Theravada forum, it's entirely appropriate to quote from the Visuddhimagga. My perspective is that it's good to reference any sourced quotation, and then to leave it to the discretion of...

Re: Can mind sustained without an object?

Greetings, Can mind sustained without an object? "From the origination of name-&-form is the origination of the mind. From the cessation of name-&-form is the cessation of the mind." (SN 47.42) What is the object of each Jhana? That depends on what meditation you're doing, doesn't it? There's lots o...

Re: Is it okey to buy Meat in a foodstore and eat?

Greetings, As long as the meat comes from an animal that is already dead its fine in Theravada Buddhism. You cant order like a live fish or lobster that will die after you order it. That may be true for monastics... can you cite anything that says this is also true for lay people? Metta, Paul. :)

Karma
In what context do you say that? In the context of past lives (which the Buddha taught) or "collective karma" (which is hokum, not found in the Buddha's teaching).
