Re: New Buddhist centre opening in Southend, UK

The grand opening was today. Obviously a stressful day for the organisers and it was extremely busy, so one cannot hold that against them: we're only human and any rudeness I perceived was not intentional, I know. But... They turned away an old man who couldn't take his shoes off. The FWBO/Triratna ...

Re: Open letter to the English Theravada Buddhist community

I am a physicist and a Theravada Buddhist practitioner. The two labels are not mutually exclusive.

For practice, I agree. For general interest reading, Mahayana is a hell of a lot more wholesome than plenty of other stuff out there.

Re: The Future of World Religions

Even if, in 2050, I were the only person in the world still practising Buddhism, I'd continue to do so. I don't subscribe to argumentum ad populum.

Re: Advice from a Christian friend (video)

A life in the Dhamma is the only rebuttal you need. I know what you mean. I've not spoken to this friend for years (we just lost touch with each other about the time my PhD funding fell through), so I wasn't after a rebuttal in that sense. Really, I was just curious to see if videos existed running...

Advice from a Christian friend (video)

When I first discovered Buddhism, I was just emerging from a few years of being a Christian (my family are atheists, so this wasn't a from-birth indoctrination thing: just part of my own journey of discovery). A friend of mine who was concerned about me told me to watch this video. https://youtu.be/...

Re: New Buddhist centre opening in Southend, UK

Thank you Bhante, that was an interesting read. I am not so worried about broken lineages if the tradition presents practices that are helpful; however, I think the doctrinal differences between Mahayana and Theravada (let alone the other religions also incorporated into this movement's teaching) wo...

New Buddhist centre opening in Southend, UK

There is a new Buddhist centre opening next week in Southend. It seems to be run by this group: http://www.leighbuddhistcommunity.com" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; At first glance it appears to be a mishmash of teachings, and I'm not sure how much will actually be compatible with th...

Yes, that's the one. Another user here, ImageMarie (I think), goes there too.

Re: Samatha Trust

I think I've been there before actually. If it's the place I'm thinking of, there was an impressive mural.
