Re: Buddhist Puritanism

Practicing 227 precepts as a Theravada monastic is as good an example of puritanism as you'd find anywhere.

Huh?
I think he is referring to the Aryuveda practice of drinking your own urine in the morning, practiced by some forest monks I believe.

Re: Conditions of Restlessness.

Restlessness begets restlessness, the more you let it control you when it arises the more it will arise, try to observe it without feeding it or acting on it.

Judging by the lack of reaction of the monks sitting behind him this already had happened before the public announcement.

Re: Ajahn Martin is Despondent

Maybe. But Nanachat and other western monasteries don't seem to have such problems training westerners. Maybe it's just Ajahn Martin and his insistence on doing things the way he had to do under Ajahn Maha Boowa. Yes but they have plenty of senior monks that can step up if needed when an abbot or t...

Re: Ajahn Martin is Despondent

What is clear is that practising according to the suttas and vinaya involves living in a community and being trained: “Suppose a mendicant invites other mendicants to admonish them. But they’re hard to admonish, having qualities that make them hard to admonish. They're impatient, and don't take ins...

Re: Ajahn Martin is Despondent

I say this because if I ordained and became a bhikkhu, I would want to practice as detailed in the Suttas and Vinaya. I wouldn't want to emulate and follow the teachings of U This and Ajahn That, or whoever happened to have been favoured by my preceptor or the abbot. Again, I don't know, so it's ju...

Re: Which disagreements on practice and doctrine are actually aDhammic?

I agree. I think this is actually a nice way of reexpressing Paul's point above. Near enemies are an important thing to be aware of. Absolutely, the problem is who gets to decide what is a near enemy and what is a skillful means. As Jesus said don't worry about the speck in your neighbours eye, dea...

Re: Which disagreements on practice and doctrine are actually aDhammic?

According to the Mahāsāṃghika there is no mixed kamma, only black or white kamma. So for them things were literally black and white. I'm not sure what your point is here, are you suggesting that the phrase "Dhammic religion" only means kamma? I'm pretty sure there's more to a religion tha...

Re: Which disagreements on practice and doctrine are actually aDhammic?

Killing is aDhammic, stealing is aDhammic, inappropriate sexual activity is aDhammic, lying is aDhammic, intoxication is aDhammic, living your life mostly online rather than in reality is is aDhammic. The thing with a lot of the topics that you listed is that while they could be valid interpretation...

Re: Ajahn Martin is Despondent

Its common for abbots to at some point decide they've had enough and that it's time to give someone else a turn so I can spend some time on solitary practice, there's nothing wrong with that. From what he said Ajahn Martin was lucky, he knew he wanted to be with Luangta Maha Boowa as soon as he met ...

Re: Mindfulness is a technique?

I understand that people will refer to the words of the Buddha being supreme, etc., but there is the question of how it is known that one's unaugmented interpretation of texts is better than another person's interpretation for all practitioners . And beyond that, the deeper question of whether the ...

Re: Lotus & Half-Lotus

I will stick to finding a tree at whose base I can comfortably sit with crossed legs, as that is what has proved to work best so far. Maybe use a chair. I's expect the exercises to pay off if you do them several time a day for a month, that's how long it took for me, this of course will depend on y...

Re: Remaining Focused on the Breath

This is normal, learning to do this practice is a process of noticing that the mind has wandered and gently bringing it back again and again. It would be worse if you weren't noticing how much the mind wanders, the fact that you are noticing it at all is a sign of progress. Persistence pays off in t...
