Re: Before Nirvana Extremely painfull sensations.
Hi Legolas, I'm no expert in attaining nibbana, but it seems to me a reasonable assumption that such accounts are based on practical experience. As you say, in meditation pain often arises. Where does the link say it is necessary , or that the meditator should seek it out by poking herself/himself ...

Re: Before Nirvana Extremely painfull sensations.
Hi, It seems a strange way to nibbana. At different stages it describes the body & mind becoming extremely fatigued. The Buddha explicitly states that nibbana cannot be reached when the body is fatigued. A lot of the nanas seem to describe a tantric/kundalini/chakra approach, which is heavily ce...

Re: The Commentaries are unreliable: I know better
I think there is doubt about the word "realities" so is "dhammas" less problematic? I personally prefer dhammas. And I ask again, is there any difference between seeing-consciousness and form as described for example in SN35 on the ayatanas and seeing consciousness and visible o...

Re: The Commentaries are unreliable: I know better
a) Understanding realities - I dont get b) Doing something unnatural - I dont understand c) Ditto The Buddha gave a progressive teaching to Suppabuddha who gave full attention to the words of the Buddha. Suppabuddha's mind contemplated the benefit of virtue/generosity -the bliss of heaven - the dan...

Re: The Commentaries are unreliable: I know better
One example might be the technique of "no technique", where "developing understanding of realities" au natural looks to the abhidhamma for its validation. As in the Sujin Boriharnwanaket "method." Ok, so earlier when you mentioned about vipassana techniques, you meant ...

One example might be the technique of "no technique", where "developing understanding of realities" au natural looks to the abhidhamma for its validation. Is that something like the example by Alex (earlier in this thread): about Suppabuddha attaining while listening to a Dhamma...

Re: Is the result of Parinibbana Annihilation?
I think tilt and alex would make a great vaudeville act. It reminds me of "whose" on first(base) - no whats on first(base) etc. etc. etc.

Re: The Commentaries are unreliable: I know better
Apologies to Robert, my previous post does not make complete sense, I actually thought Peter was the original poster. It must be my age. Apologies to Peter as well, if he will accept an apology from a balding hair-splitter.

Re: The Commentaries are unreliable: I know better
In all honesty much of this seems to me to be bald men discussing combs. Splitting hairs about states which probably no one involved has any experiential knowledge of. How wonderfully insightful. Pretty obvious actually. It requires no iddhis or depth. Clangingly obvious. Perhaps with all the hair ...

Re: The Commentaries are unreliable: I know better
I do not deny that experiences that are in line with "nana knowledges" do occur when practicing certain types of meditation, my contention is whether these are within the Buddha's teachings. What are these forms of meditaion and which Commentary cites them? My understanding (and I am open...
