Mental fabrications and the aggregates
Mental fabrications/formations are in several suttas listed as being feelings & perceptions; Perceptions & feelings are mental; these are things tied up with the mind. That's why perceptions & feelings are mental fabrications. - MN44 and SN41.6 but why are perceptions and feelings and me...

Re: in the united states?
Reanimation! What is the visa situation when it comes to europeans ordaining in the states? Seeing how a U.S citizenship is pretty desireable for many people around the world, and you generally would have to be skilled or get married to get a residency, are internationals given some sort of religiou...

Re: The role of perceptions in meditation vs. reality
I just found this thread: http://www.dhammawheel.com/viewtopic.php?f=16&t=10653" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; which I think would kinda explain why no one is willing to engage in these things too much in the thread. I guess it's potentially highly controversial stuff a...

Re: Is the mind permanent?
So, is the continuum (not consciousness per se) of what is experienced as consciousness permanent? If not, why?

Re: anapanasati sutta both vipassana and jhana?
I think you're missing my point. I'm saying that progressing through and mastering the jhanas is a work of insight/vipassana in itself because it would entail you working out how to lessen stress and suffering through understanding bodily/verbal/mental fabrication; i.e a major part of dependent co-...

Re: anapanasati sutta both vipassana and jhana?
A common statement is that jhana is mere concentration and a tool for doing the really important stuff. In a way, though samadhi depends on a mind that is calm, content and free from the hindrances, easier said than done. I think you're missing my point. I'm saying that progressing through and mast...

Re: The possibility of Jhana and enlightenment
How would these people know if other people in other continents aren't accessing higher states of meditation?

Re: anapanasati sutta both vipassana and jhana?
so as of right now i'm learning jhana and am wondering how to combine it with insight as jhana alone leads no where. if i practice this sutta then my meditation practice is complete, right? Also, check out the section 'Part Four: Advanced Practice' in the book 'With Each and Every Breath' by Thanis...

A Whole Book on Meditation by Thanissaro Bhikkhu
Hey! Since ven. Thanissaro's last book on mindfulness and Sati got so much attention here on the boards I thought I'd link to his new book dealing more specifically with the intricacies of his particular method of meditation - 'With Each & Every Breath'! Published a couple of days ago, it's a re...

Re: would learning jhana solely from sutta be possible?
Richard, Suffice it to say that I know someone. I don't think it necessary for anyone to know who exactly in name. With respect and a warm tone I say it is just going to be a matter of that you take me at my word or you don't. As a 5 Preceptor, I do my best never to lie, among other things, if that...

Re: would learning jhana solely from sutta be possible?
Hi Alan, is this possible? assuming no other knowledge of meditation could one read every sutta on jhana and perhaps on meditation in general and end up with the know how to enter jhana? This is possible, but it may take years even for a highly gifted person. As Leigh Brasington writes, personal in...

Re: would learning jhana solely from sutta be possible?
i kind of agree but on common topics such as jhana there are so many rough sketches that one can make a fairly detailed map if they put them all together. now something like kasina practice would take others to make a map of any kind since it is mentioned and discussed only a very small amount but ...

Re: would learning jhana solely from sutta be possible?
Like most of the suttas I feel that it is a collection of a number of important key points which is used mostly for memorization and that it takes a community of experienced practitioners to elaborate upon on it in order for it to be understood properly. Kinda like a rough sketch of a road map which...
