Re: Member Poll on "News, Current Events & Politics" at DW

Look at this post David. Look at the meme. This is from your admin. Do you think this kind of post helps? Does it set a good tone? https://dhammawheel.com/viewtopic.php?f=54&t=29216&start=540#p472905 It's in the News section, which we're discussing what role that will have in the near future. An ad...

Re: Member Poll on "News, Current Events & Politics" at DW

Whats a good tone? I think the actual problem is either a lack of (good) leadership, or the conviction that the Dhamma doesn't require or can do without (good) leadership. Lead with an iron-fist, people complain. Lead with laissez-faire, people complain. It's best to try and find the perfect middle...

Re: Member Poll on "News, Current Events & Politics" at DW

If the mods really don't want to ban them they should just restrict them to the lounge subforum where they can ramble on to their heart's content without derailing every single thread on the main forum. I can assure you we still suspend and ban people who violate the terms of service and we also re...

Re: Member Poll on "News, Current Events & Politics" at DW

My favourite metaphor for the job when I did it over on the other Wheel, was actually gardening: encouraging flowers to flourish and removing the occasional weed. Every gardener knows that weeds take over if left unchecked. Don't some racists like to use the weed-metaphor? Here come the weeds, over...

Re: Is it at all possible to get rid of poverty entirely?

It has been done in small countries (North Europe and Singapore comes to mind) Northern Europe and Western Europe still have poverty, but at a lesser rate than the U.S. https://www.statista.com/statistics/233910/poverty-rates-in-oecd-countries/ Singapore has poverty too, they are just good at hidin...

Re: Member Poll on "News, Current Events & Politics" at DW

I showed a Royal wedding thread to a non-Buddhist and S/he asked me how Buddhist could be so aversion towards the royal family. 1 or 2 Buddhists expressing an opinion (I believe one of them identifies as Hindu) doesn't extrapolate to all Buddhists. I'm a Yank, but have no aversion or dislike of the...

Re: Member Poll on "News, Current Events & Politics" at DW

The Forum is either going to get serious about Buddhism, or not. Most of the members here are householders. As householders we live in a political world, where worldly politics effects our living and work conditions. What if a member wanted to ask a question, trying to find a Dhammic perspective to...

Re: Race, IQ and Idenity politics: A debate.

Is this racist? It depends on the intention as Bundokji noted and also if evidence to the contrary is considered. Arthur Jensen was controversial because of those writings on race. In a later article, Jensen argued that his claims had been misunderstood: ...nowhere have I "claimed" an "innate defic...

Re: Trouble with buddhism view on suicide

I'd also be interested in hearing what views you heard and by whom. While Buddhism is opposed to suicide, it takes a much less harsh view of it, compared to other religions. I am not condoning suicide, but there are cases of arahants (mentioned above) who were considered blameless who basically did ...

Re: Anyone here wearing contact lenses?

I wore contact lenses (soft) from around ages 20 to 30 and had a lot of the problems you are experiencing. It could be allergies, but I also had a lot of mucus building up quickly on the lenses and it got to be too irritating, so just went back to glasses. Or it could just be a natural defense again...

Re: Harry, Meghan and my Papañca

By what standards do these studies measure misery and happiness? By consumerist, worldly standards? I believe it is by self-reporting of their happiness on those surveys. For some that might be worldly standards, for others it might be loftier, spiritual type happiness, general physical and psychol...

Re: Harry, Meghan and my Papañca

I mostly agree with No_Mind; misery can come in all socioeconomic classes, but clearly the most misery is among the impoverished. The biggest gain in happiness comes when one comes out of poverty. It continues to rise up to the peak at about middle-class to upper-middle class. After that it is dimin...
