Re: Timeless model of Paṭiccasamuppāda
Sorry if a "with this, this is not" scenario has emerged from what I said, but I was not conceding that there could be feeling without craving. In the first proposition I was indicating that, through jhanas, a putthujana can temporarily alleviate the entire mass as a whole, feeling includ...

Re: Can we keep "God" (Abrahamic religion) as the meditation object?
The question is whether five hindrances be suppressed by keeping "God" as the meditation object. (Under AN 9.64: Hindrances): "Monks, there are these five hindrances. Which five? Sensual desire as a hindrance, ill will as a hindrance, sloth & drowsiness as a hindrance, restlessne...

Re: Timeless model of Paṭiccasamuppāda
atemporal : (adj) existing or considered without relation to time. DO is conditioned as it is part of the path.....headed by "Ignorance".....therefore it is considered existing by run-of-the-mill person.....or DO goes "beyond" the current boundary/condition/plane of existence......

Re: Right knowledge and right view technically the same?
The N8P itself provides the "right view" / pointing / directing / aiming / looking towards.....to what is being directed. This is why N8P itself is the teaching.....but has a purpose / intention.....to enable one to cross the shore. The "right knowledge" or rather "direct kn...

Re: Thai forest tradition - Refuge in Awareness
Now that this thread has gone quiet, there are matters I wish to attend to which will go off-topic (hence the delay) but has genuine interest related to this thread itself. (mods, split if you wish) Anything that we can point or refer to is not self. Awareness is clearly not self since we can talk a...

Re: Thai forest tradition - Refuge in Awareness
Ajahn Sumedho from his book Intuitive Awareness : In terms of this conditioned realm that we perceive, create and hold to, it is a very unstable, uncertain, undependable and changing condition in itself. That’s just the way it is. The Buddha pointed to the instability of conditioned phenomena, to t...

Re: Consciousness
The "conscious mind as explored and examined in modern psychology and psychiatry and medicine" is based on careful study as well as sophisitcated observation and examination of the body and of information gathered either from people that explain what they've experienced or deduced from th...

Re: karmic conundrum
.....but what is your vibe on the repercussions of this act???. The Buddha describes the unpleasant consequences of not sticking to the precepts: (AN 8.40: Results): "Monks, the taking of life — when indulged in, developed, & pursued — is something that leads to hell, leads to rebirth as a...

Re: Thai forest tradition - Refuge in Awareness
Is there any mention of this mystery in the Suttas? "mystery".....(noun).....something that is difficult or impossible to understand or explain. The most obvious one is probably the suttas themselves.....some are easier and some are very difficult to see its true meaning.....so suttas can...

Re: Thai forest tradition - Refuge in Awareness
Sometimes an ironic, paradoxical, or illogical description can highlight the profoundness of the mystery, other times it's just BS. I'm inclined towards the latter regarding the description we're discussing. It all depends.....but no matter how much we like to read, to hear and even point at it.......

Re: Thai forest tradition - Refuge in Awareness
It seems all pretty Mahayana to me,..... Be it Mahayana or Theravada, maybe Zen or Vajrayana.....doesn't matter.....all labels.....the purpose for their existence is to ship beings from one shore to the other.....for different discriminative minds. .....just because we're talking about a state that...

Re: Thai forest tradition - Refuge in Awareness
If we analysis further on awareness here, we see that at one point, it is conditioned.....then at another point, it is unconditioned.....this gives an impression that it changes.....this change is an illusion.....the reason being is that awareness had always been unconditioned.....at all times. Sou...

Re: Thai forest tradition - Refuge in Awareness
The point is that awareness is not inherently unconditioned, which is the view I think the OP posited. For most people awareness is very much conditioned, but for those who are awakened I believe it's reasonable to say awareness is unconditioned. If we analysis further on awareness here, we see tha...
