Re: Watch Juno's Jupiter Orbit Insertion live now

I love this kind of stuff, but I missed it. Did you get to watch it, Ben? Hi Sattva, It was a visualisation that was linked to the spacecraft data updated in real time. That is, in real time from data acquisition. Light takes 39 minutes to get from Jupiter to Earth. The maneuver went as to plan and...

Re: The mistrust of science

If in Copernicus time he had said that the World is made of atoms, and that each atom has subparticles, that wouldn't be testable at the time. It would constitute an educated hypothesis, but imune to experiment. Centuries later, when this became testable, it came under the scrutiny of science. And ...

Re: The mistrust of science

A comment from particle physicist Professor Brian Cox (who has a new series on BBC TV called "The Forces of Nature") regarding cynicism towards professional expertise: “It’s entirely wrong, and it’s the road back to the cave. The way we got out of the caves and into modern civilisation is...

Sadly, it will persist.
You are welcome. You are right, the mistrust of science will continue to persist.
The irony is exquisite.

Watch Juno's Jupiter Orbit Insertion live now

In a few hours, the Juno space probe will perform a tricky maneuver (Jupiter Orbit Insertion) to slow down so as to be captured by Jupiter's gravity where upon Juno will then make another 35 orbital fly-bys while collecting data and imagery of the gas giant. The JOI can be watched via NASA's app: NA...

The mistrust of science

This will be of interest to some but I recommend it for all. The following was delivered as the commencement address by Atul Gawande at the California Institute of Technology, on Friday, June 10th. If this place has done its job—and I suspect it has—you’re all scientists now. Sorry, English and hist...

Re: Pictures that prove Australia is the Craziest

I think this is fairly accurate: [cartoon] This bloke https://northamericancontrarian.com/2014/05/18/deadly-encounter-with-an-australian-melon/ would probably agree. Then again, he nearly got himself killed doing something dumb. (I know, I shouldn't be too rude about Canadians' intelligence. We've ...

Re: Does been a vegetarian mean gods are with you?

Yes, very good scriptural support and quite a bit of it, as well. I suggest you research suttas on the Buddha's refutation of the Nigantha's view on kamma and also research the origin of the schism led by Devadutta. Thank you kindly Ben, it's always humbling to see where I'm lacking in understandin...

Re: Does been a vegetarian mean gods are with you?

Perhaps you can look at it in a more generalized way. Feelings like "the gods are with you" probably stem from the good kamma you develop by not eating animals that have been killed. Soon. The idea that there is good kamma from being vegetarian is wrong view - and wrong view is akusala. H...

Re: What do the wider Theravadan world think about Goenka?

I've just recently completed a 10-day Vipassana retreat in Goenka's tradition. It was my third, although it had been a number of years since I last did one of these. I quite like the technique and teachings Goenka offers, but he doesn't give much credit to the wider body of Buddhist thought and pra...

Re: "Anicca" as "uncertainty" - Ajahn Chah via Ajahn Amaro

With all due respect, it doesn't seem like the "yeah well I don't think so" argument contributes much to the conversation. My point was that IMPERMANENCE is something I can easily handle in meditation...but being able to quickly call it to mind in all manner of daily interactions can take...

Re: What do the wider Theravadan world think about Goenka?

I suggest you do some research on SN Goenka particularly, the esteem in which he held the Bhikkhu Sangha. Also, it might be worthwhile searching for, and reading, the obituaries to him. That should give you an indication of the respect he held for the tradition and the respect that the wider Therava...

Welcome Dhammacola!
Yes, you can take refuge here.
Chill, read, learn and discuss.
Thank you for sharing your traumatic experience and I hope the negative effects of being held up at gunpoint diminish.
