Re: not photoshopped

Hi David,
Looks like the sort of extreme temperatures we experienced in central Victoria in the week preceeding my move to Tasmania which coincided with the catastrophic black saturday bushfires.
Stay indoors and stay hydrated and take care.
with metta,

Re: Defilements etc. Somebody Stop Me!

Dealing with any addictive or compulsive behaviour is difficult. There may be some really good mundane strategies that will assist you as well as maintaining your dhamma practice on a regular and consistent basis. For example - I highly recommend the use of nicotine patch replacement therapy to assi...

Re: summer vacation and having your own retreat

Dear all, Summer vacation is comming up and yesterday I asked myself 'What am I going to do the whole day now I don't have to study anymore?' The point is, that since I am slowly trying to incorporate the eight precepts in daily life, I cannot fill the day with activities like reading fantasy and w...

Re: Can you feel it when someone sends you metta?

How about the elephant Nālāgiri? http://www.aimwell.org/DPPN/nalagiri.html ... As the elephant was about to attack the child, the Buddha spoke to him, suffusing him with all the love at his command, and, stretching out his right hand, he stroked the animal’s forehead. Thrilling with joy at the touc...

Re: Can you feel it when someone sends you metta?

I'm not sure. Can you be certain that this is not just mind playing games? However, I will say that Ven. Bhante Vimalaramsi says that he has felt waves of metta, sent by others, that have washed over him - just some anecdotal evidence. :anjali: With respect, that is not evidence. With respect to 'f...

Re: Jack Kornfield "Psychedelics and Spiritual Practice"

Suramerayamajja pamadatthana veramani sikkhapadam samadiyami I undertake the precept to refrain from intoxicating drinks and drugs which lead to carelessness. Isn't this really all there is to it? Whether we are literalists or not, if we're going to call ourselves "Buddhists", shouldn't we at least...

Re: Dying without attaining Sotapanna

Hello disciple, Just my two cents as a long-time non-serious or consistent practitioner but a faithful one nonetheless.... On the question of your rebirth I would first look at pegembara's link. If you want to acheive a fortunate rebirth in the next life it is definitely possible. The suttas are of...

Tasmanian Tiger Snake giving a skink a lift. What a great image! As is the one of Ben re-posted by Modus.Ponens. We have several snakes at home. My partner has been keeping them for decades. (All have the proper permits and none are venomous; all are handled with great care.) Yes, I have a current ...

Re: Did God create everything that exists?

Frankly, 'God' in its manifestations (human and mythological) throughout human history has been a vehicle for terror and suffering that is unparalleled.
I never hope to meet such a nasty, narcissistic and psychopathic being.

I have just seen this on ABC TV's science programme, Catalyst. No great surprises for most of us here - yes, it does work! - but nice to see the kinds of research going on and to get the endorsement of the scientific and medical professionals. http://www.abc.net.au/catalyst/stories/4477405.htm :nam...
