Degeneration of the World
At a time when rulers are unprincipled, officials become unprincipled. When officials are unprincipled, holy men and householders become unprincipled. When holy men and householders are unprincipled, the people of town and country become unprincipled. When the people of town and country are unprinc...

Re: Is the belief in re-birth damaging?
You being born in this life is also not you
using the teaching of anatta to dissociate from the consequences of your actions is not what the buddha intended
you will have to experience them, not someone else, only there will not really be any "you" involved

Re: The First Name of the Buddha
Angirasa (Angīrasa).-A name applied to the Buddha several times in the Pitakas. (E.g., Vin.i.25; D.iii.196; S.i.196; A.iii.239; Thag.v.536; J.i.116). In the Commentaries three etymologies are given: Buddhaghosa says that "it means emitting rays of various hues from the body," and that the...

The First Name of the Buddha
Hi, this will probably be pretty controversial, please remember this is in the Early Buddhism forum & not Classical Theravada. Well, my question was prompted because awhile back it was brought to my attention that the name "Siddhattha" does not appear anywhere in the Early Buddhist Tex...

Re: Abortion poll
I voted "up until the start of the 3rd trimester" as I believe that is when "consciousness has descended". That's based upon my limited understanding of fetal development (I'm not an expert) not an expert, limited understanding, but going to say to just go for it & kill the ...

Re: Let's discuss Mount Sineru!
The alternative, natural explanation doesn't have to mean the Buddha lied either. It could have been taught as a simile, allegory. That's lying. If one must reject the teaching it would be better to believe the Buddha did not speak it. Not at all. The Buddha used similes and allegories all the time...
