Re: If Nibbana doesn't exist, would Buddhism still be worth it?

Greetings Wind, For a while I doubted whether nibbana was actually possible. Even when I was unsure about this I still knew Buddhism was worthwhile for the benefits it brings here and now. At Dharma Wheel, m0rl0ck recently posted this little animated Dharma comic... http://www.buddhanet.net/flash/to...

Re: Aussie Aussie Aussie! Oi Oi Oi!

It's a bit of a shame that the official record-keeping body won't acknowledge her "youngest person to circumnavigate the globe" achievement because she's under 18 years old.

Oh, I thought you were celebrating us getting to the 20/20 World Cup Final overnight with a win over Pakistan!

(which is of course very good news too...)

Re: Why learn Pali?

Greetings Thomas, I like to understand key individual terms, because some of them are quite deep in their meaning and are translated differently by different translators (e.g. sankhara, dukkha, jati, bhava, namarupa, upadana) so my interest is in trying to understand the words. The sentence construc...

Re: SN 35.236 The Simile Of Hands And Feet

Greetings Mike, I seem to have used a much more organic process: try something, see if it works, make some changes if it doesn't... If that's the way you look at it, just be sure to continue doing it and don't become complacent.... great is better than good. (You did a nice job in that la...

Re: One "citta" at a time

Greetings acinteyyo, Further to my earlier post, you seem to have come across a "perceived discrepency" in the sum basket of Mahavihara and Tipitaka materials. Summarized, your options are as follows: - If you are uncertain whether the perceived discrepency is real, you may continue to dig...

Re: SN 35.236 The Simile Of Hands And Feet

Greetings Mike, all, Perhaps I'm misunderstanding your point, but your argument, here and elsewhere, seems to be: 1. The Dhamma is best understood according to some particular philosophical point of view X. 2. Therefore interpretation Y is better than interpretation Z because it is in line with X. T...

Re: SN 35.236 The Simile Of Hands And Feet

Greetings Mike, I guess I can't understand the argument that reading the Sutta and understanding "eye" to be the obvious piece of hardware that I use to see my screen is somehow "scholarly" or "ontological". Well, consider your view against this... (http://nanavira.xtre...

Re: Adhamma

Greetings Sanghamitta, It does what it says on the tin. Indeed. So don't forget that the Dhammic Free For All tin is labelled like this.... No holds barred discussion on the Buddhadhamma. Argue about rebirth, kamma, commentarial interpretations etc. Be nice to each other. And that its guidelines are...

Re: SN 35.236 The Simile Of Hands And Feet

Greetings Mike, I don't really understand how pursuing this ontological/phenomenological distinction would be useful to my understanding. Perhaps it is interesting to analyse Dhamma in terms of some particular Western Philosophical categories, but it doesn't do much for me. Which is fair enough, but...
