Re: Any real life examples these days of Tetralemma (Catuskoti) fourfold negation? What would be the fifth ('true') corn

[...] But the instructed disciple of the noble ones discerns view, discerns the origination of view, discerns the cessation of view, discerns the path of practice leading to the cessation of view, and so for him that view ceases. He is freed from birth, aging, & death; from sorrows, lamentation...

Re: Any real life examples these days of Tetralemma (Catuskoti) fourfold negation? What would be the fifth ('true') corn

Fourfold "negation" would be 1. not X 2. not not X 3. not both x and not x 4. not neither x nor not x "Four theses" are 1. X 2. not X 3. X and not X 4. neither X nor not X I think your formulation of the negation is confusing in that it uses double negatives. I think the idea is...

Re: Any real life examples these days of Tetralemma (Catuskoti) fourfold negation? What would be the fifth ('true') corn

I’m not sure if this has come up already, but this seems relevant to the conversation: [Upasiva:] ........... ........... ............. ......... .......... [The Buddha:] One who has reached the end has no criterion [3] by which anyone would say that — for him it doesn't exist. When all phenomena a...

Re: Any real life examples these days of Tetralemma (Catuskoti) fourfold negation? What would be the fifth ('true') corn

Here is a sutta which talks about the undeclared issues....it describes the four issues related to the condition of the tathagata after death as being views....and it tells how uncertainty about these issues is dispelled through cessation of views: AN 7.51 Avyakata Sutta: Undeclared https://www.acce...

Re: Any real life examples these days of Tetralemma (Catuskoti) fourfold negation? What would be the fifth ('true') corn

When the Buddha says that he has done away with positions, I read it so: "A 'position [regarding this subject] ,' Vaccha, is something that a Tathagata has done away with. I don't want to put words in your mouth, but you have invited me to tell you what I see of your "perspective," w...

Re: Any real life examples these days of Tetralemma (Catuskoti) fourfold negation? What would be the fifth ('true') corn

This is an interesting statement: My view is that a fully released monk would not be mistaken in holding views But we aren't having a discussion about whether or not a fully released monk would be mistaken in holding any view. As I understand it, we're having a conversation about a fully released m...

Re: Any real life examples these days of Tetralemma (Catuskoti) fourfold negation? What would be the fifth ('true') corn

So I take it that you think that there is no reason as to why a fully released monk would not hold that stance other than what you have listed. Does the reason listed demonstrate why the thesis is wrong or why the monk wouldn't hold it to you? The stance itself could be correct, the Tathāgata could...

Re: Any real life examples these days of Tetralemma (Catuskoti) fourfold negation? What would be the fifth ('true') corn

I don't think that you are going far enough with your inquiries. You still haven't addressed why a realized monk would not hold that position. Why is it a mistake, i.e. why does the monk not hold the position? You argumentation above seems to be "It is a mistake because it is a mistake." ...

Re: Tipitaka protection act Sri Lanka

Those who oppose the Bill say that according to the Buddha’s teachings in the Tripitaka, there are infinite ways of explaining and representing aspects of Buddhism and it is against the teaching that all Buddhists have to be confined to a narrow explanation defined by the Committee that is being pr...

Re: Any real life examples these days of Tetralemma (Catuskoti) fourfold negation? What would be the fifth ('true') corn

CLEARLY IT IS MY STATEMENT DESCRIBING THE THOUGHTS OF THE MONK WHICH IS MISTAKEN. No need for caps. I've been quite civil with you. Why is the thought of the monk mistaken? Do you think that it is called mistaken on account of a reason other than his thesis being mistaken? Why would it be a mistake...

Re: Any real life examples these days of Tetralemma (Catuskoti) fourfold negation? What would be the fifth ('true') corn

The reason given for "not declaring" in DN 15: that would be mistaken Declaring the four theses here is described as a "mistake." You have not seen that it is NOT the four thesis which are described as a "mistake". This can be seen by closely examining the wording of t...

Re: Any real life examples these days of Tetralemma (Catuskoti) fourfold negation? What would be the fifth ('true') corn

Does he? As I recall, he says he dismisses X and Y and, instead, teaches "via the middle." There follows an exegesis of dependent origination most times. I have some time today, and you've already done the work of assembling a list of tetralemma-esque passages in the Pali Canon, so I'll g...

Re: Eternal citta in "Theravada"? ---> probably Found.

In SN22.85 Yamaka sutta, lord budda explains to yamaka, that for an arhant end of life means only end of suffering asit is the end of rupa, vedana, sanna, sankara, vinnana. Here we got to understand that citta remains without defilements. I looked at sn22.85. It is sariputta who does the explaining a...
