Hedonism. Many people have tried it, especially many celebrities, actors, actresses, musicians. Many (not all) end up depressed and are still full of suffering.

Re: How do I become a nun?

I get it, but how do I go about it? Do I show up at a monastery one day and ask them to ordain me? Is it that simple or is there something else I need to do? Definitely do not just go show up and expect them to ordain you. There may be some application process or they may not even have an opening f...

Re: How do I become a nun?

I’d recommend visiting some Theravada temples and monasteries first and participating in their programs and activities and observing the nuns. And then eventually asking the nuns there some questions and see if it’s something you would want to do.

- It seems silly to anything after a hundred years anyway. :D  I agree. Silly is humble with a smile. Yes, I suppose so. Judging things from the past by the standards of today is known as presentism. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Presentism_(historical_analysis) So, yes, silly, but by the sta...

I've seen it, I think on youtube but just looked and don't see it, except for trailers of the remake.

Yes, it's pretty silly. It had a suicide (acting) scene, so maybe it was removed from youtube?

Re: Is hair spiritual?

Hair can be something people become especially attached to and identify with (speaking from experience here!). I believe that's why it's shaved off in Buddhism, to lose your distinguishing marks and source of attachment. There's not anything spiritual about it as far as I'm aware. Yes, there are ma...

Re: Buddhist Asceticism and the first council

Does asceticism mean holy life? Yes and not giving in to every desire and chasing after sense pleasures. What others say is happiness the noble ones say is suffering. What others say is suffering the noble ones know as happiness. See, this teaching is hard to understand, it confuses the ignorant. T...

Re: Buddhist Asceticism and the first council

Some incorrectly think the Buddha was opposed to asceticism, but in numerous suttas we see the Buddha referred to as the ascetic-Gotama. "Though my skin, my nerves and my bones shall waste away and my life blood go dry, I will not leave this seat until I have attained the highest wisdom, called...

Certainly. The ones attempting to convert people most likely genuinely believe they are being compassionate and helpful, but with certain methods, may not actually be that wholesome or helpful.
