Re: Any Buddhist lawyers out there (UK)?

:goodpost: We can imagine a useful society for dentists who are Buddhists...but there are no Buddhist Dentists. There are no Buddhist Psychotherapists or Buddhist Electricians or Buddhist Lawyers. Peter, I agree with your point, but there are Buddhist psychotherapists - its a growing subfield of ps...

Re: Temporary Ordination at Panditarama?

hi Chi, wow that is very interesting. Are you saying you ordained as a Bhikkhu without chanting the Pali ceremonial chants? This would be considered heretical by most Thai monks, where even an incorrect pronouciation of one word would be considered to invalidate the whole proceedure (according to so...

Re: Giving money to the Vihara/Wat: is it OK or not?

Well it isn't being givento or managed by them but the charity responcible for the Monastery, or at least that is how I understand its management at places I have been/in the west. . This would depend on the monastery involved and wouldn't always be the case. What has what you got to say to do with...

Re: Giving money to the Vihara/Wat: is it OK or not?

I know of some monasteries in the west, which I have been to, which virtually treat donations as assets of the monks. There are other monasteries in the west too which provide funds for the monks to travel to give teachings etc. Some monks are frequently flying around the countries and overseas to ...

Re: Can killing be acceptable in Buddhism?

I'm sorry, really I am, but this does irritate me. These hypothetical scenarios are utterly pointless. What about the one where you are a transplant surgeon and just happen to be working as a doctor in a small town (maybe an island) with no other medical help. 4 people come in and each has one diff...

Thanks for the update Chi.

How about memorising the ordination proceedure - did you need to?

Thanks for the update - was that a full ordination or novice?

Can you say more about the robe wearing. In Thailand there are 4 different ways of wearing the robe. 2 of them are very hard to accomplish too! I notice there are different styles in Burma.

But, if you are not ordained then how does the visa situation work? Generally the tourist visa is for a max of 90 days.

Re: Ordination at Wat Pah Nanachat

Parental permission is not necessary. One exception is if you threaten to burn down the monastery if the monks do not ordain you (seriously). See the article Crosby, Kate 2005 Only if you let go of that Tree: Ordination without Parental Consent according to Theravåda Vinaya. Buddhist Studies Review...
