Re: Respect a person but not their beliefs?

Besides the term 'respect' being relative (and subject to opening cans of worms), where's being judgmental going to get anyone?...where's the benefit?...and why should it matter?...deciding to be respectful, or disrespectful, is a recipe for discord, because, without a doubt, feelings will change, ...

Re: English-Speaking Monasteries in Thailand

There are a lot... Mmm, not so much...thirty thousand plus, true, although not more than a few have any semblance of a command of English, if that...Wats Pah Nanachat and Maptachan(?) are the only two this one knows of for sure...you could count the others on one hand, if you can find them (and if ...

Dark Knight...

I post this link not to throw water on the practice of meditation (for I find it most beneficial), but for those who may be interested...(the comments may, perhaps, be more informative (for some))....

Re: Video on NY Times on persecution of Burmese Muslims

Foes are dehumanized. There is not a sense of shared humanity. Identity is almost totally associated with the grouping which is inextricably intertwined with religious identity. That's basically the point...you get two, or more, people together and there are going to be problems...and #'s 2 and 3 a...

Re: Video on NY Times on persecution of Burmese Muslims

Been going on for time immemorial (different time, different context)...possibly pertinent (perhaps) to the OP is a comment I made in another thread (which one I can't recall) is, as a long time resident of Thailand, and an ordained monk, my observation (which may partially explain (somewhat) the s...

Re: Some questions about Buddhism

Truth is that there is very little over which we have direct control with the single exception of our minds. That is where Buddhism helps us a great deal. We can learn how our own minds work, learn to gain some modicum of control as to how we react to it, and then eventually learn how to endure all...

Re: Martial Law in Thailand

In the article it talked about eating sandwiches as a protest.

No joke (and just personal experience)...in almost forty years in the Kingdom, I cannot recall a single incidence of ever seeing a Thai eat (what an Occidental would call) a sandwich...more grist for the mill...

Buddhism does not forbid bribing (if the bribing is not towards an unholy end but to get what is due to one naturally).
Huh?...(used to invite further comment, or to express a lack of understanding)...
