Re: Paul Williams' On converting from Buddhism to Catholicism

I know one person who decided to stop reading DW after a thread which showed that actors are bound for hell as a result of their profession, complete with sutta references...which seems considerably more loony than anything found in the bible to my ears That is their choice and their choice for not...

Re: Paul Williams' On converting from Buddhism to Catholicism

Peter, I couldn't care less whether someone jumps ship. What I thought interesting, and what I was commenting on, what appeared to be quite a bizarre justification in the form of the William's article. As I have repeatedly said, I think there is more going on than William's is explicitly telling us...

Re: Paul Williams' On converting from Buddhism to Catholicism

I dont doubt that the reply you recieved to your EMail resulted in your being able to rest secure in the knowledge that you have him and his whole life summed up and filed neatly in a non threatening drawer. The man is a 60 year old father and grandfather. His academic credentials are impeccable. He...

Re: Are aliens devas?

Hi I'd had a question about aliens. In the case, they visit us, I'd like to know if they are devas? Please understand I mean this seriously. When you read about the UFO/alien litterature, you understand something very real is going on. Some, as Jacques Valley I think, put the phenomena of UFO's, Ap...

Re: Paul Williams' On converting from Buddhism to Catholicism

The man is a 60 year old father and grandfather. His academic credentials are impeccable. He has reached conclusions that many Buddhists would not share..but after many years of study. His is not a light hearted and credulous embracing of a faith and then dropping it for another. He is a sincere and...

Re: Paul Williams' On converting from Buddhism to Catholicism

In Buddhism you don't often hear of gratitude. Hmm... The Blessed One said, "Now what is the level of a person of no integrity? A person of no integrity is ungrateful & unthankful. This ingratitude, this lack of thankfulness, is advocated by rude people. It is entirely on the level of peop...

Re: Paul Williams' On converting from Buddhism to Catholicism

And we do Ben ? Know what other people need ? I suppose we call all have a generalised stab about what people need in the abstract..Maslow. Love. A good diet. But when it comes to individuals with a wide range of physical and genetic and cultural and even kammic diversity I think all we can do is he...

Re: Secular Buddhism

Hello Joseph...the " One Lifetime Model " is ceratinly alive and well in the Theravada...however I am not sure that the term " secular" adds much to the debate...I think that may be a concept which is a product of western thinking...There may be an alternative to both magical thi...

Re: Paul Williams' On converting from Buddhism to Catholicism

See what bothers me about this thread is not that someone jumped ship...people do that in both directions constantly. I mentioned earlier that I personally know two long term Buddhists who became Christian. One was a novice monk for a while. Nor is it that their reasons for so doing might be inconsi...

Re: Paul Williams' On converting from Buddhism to Catholicism

Yes I can see that it is much more comfortable to assume that his reasons were negative rather than positive.
Anyway must dash. First clinic is in 15 minutes. 5 people whose inner mental processes I will attempt to elicit without guess work.

Re: Paul Williams' On converting from Buddhism to Catholicism

You may be right. I can certainly see that is a more comfortable conclusion from a Buddhist perspective than the possibility that his choice was a conscious one , made from a knowledgeable position. A decision made in other words after confronting his insecurity. But I am merely speculating. I dont ...
