Re: Ordination first steps

I would recommend getting a tourist visa to Thailand and traveling to different monasteries and seeing which one you most connect with, as far as the teacher and the sangha. When your sufficiently satisfied with one particular monastery then ask the Abbot for permission to ordain. Don't worry if it...

Re: Ordination first steps

He did say I need to be ordained overseas. I am assuming there is a reason for not ordaining me here. Why not ask for the reason? It might be very beneficial to do so. If it's the quorum, perhaps there is the possibility of bringing other (US) monks over to the place. Taking care of the logistics r...

Re: Ordination first steps

You're right about the robes. I think I would donate money to the monastery who ordained me. It would be the least I could do, plus it would be a great start to living up to my vow of poverty. If you don't mind me asking, I'm curious how you plan to live as a monk without being allowed to handle mo...

Re: Wat Dhammakaya

I wonder how far things have to go before Thai government takes action. On the other hand, this cult is doomed to collapse the moment their leader passes away. It doesn't look like their leader is interested or even capable in taking measures that someone takes over the reigns after he dies. Quite a...

Re: Kasina meditations taught by the Buddha or no?

Many kasina meditation skeptical persons say kasina is not here in the suttas. i understand their skeptical thoughts. I don't know suttas enough. Really the Buddha didn't taught kasina meditations? Yes, the kasinas clearly were taught by the Buddha and they are explained and recommended in several ...

What defines a good teacher?

I was reading the Lohicca Sutta and i'm not quite sure what the implications of the Sutta actually are. If I understood the Sutta correctly, the Buddha only deemed very few teachers "not worthy of criticism in the world"; namely.. - a Tathagatha - someone who has at least one disciple who attained t...

Why most published neuroscience findings are false

Since the connection between scientific evidence and the Dhamma are often a topic on Dhammawheel, I thought that some of you might find the following interesting: A study on how "trustworthy" published neuroscience findings are: Here There are also more or less readable commentaries on the issue: he...

Re: Quoting Religious Texts

Now, now you two... Soapy, I think most believe they are doing the responsible thing by quoting a text rather than offering their own thoughts. While it may be a 'dry' response it could be less misleading than conjecture. However, even if someone were able to speak from personal experience, it may ...

Don't discipline yourself with willpower alone. It rarely works as self control is a depletable resource. Meditate a...
