Re: Sotapanna and killing
Not sure if these suttas were posted yet but they don’t make a distinction about following the precepts when training, it seems clear to me from these suttas the precepts are considered something to be followed throughout life, not just when on a meditation retreat. At one time the Buddha was stayi...

Re: My sciatica's been killing me
I am not a doctor but the guys at barbell medicine would probably suggest light deadlifts or block pulls for moderate reps and maybe take short walks. Also, you’ll probably be fine within a couple weeks if you don’t stress about it too much. Increase the weight on your deadlifts as you gain confiden...

Re: Feeling good physically despite being extremely skinny
You should consider eating in a caloric surplus while lifting weights so you can add bone mass and muscle mass to your body. This will keep you healthier in old age when bones and muscles weaken and falls become much more dangerous. Look up osteoporosis and sarcopenia.

Re: Venerating the Dhamma as the Impersonal Divine Cosmic Order symbolized by the Thousand Spoked Wheel symbol
Can we venerate the Dhamma also in it's aspect as Impersonal Divine Cosmic Order? The cosmic order is not divine, it isn’t created by divinities, it simply is. And the first noble truth is that the order of things generally sucks. Fortunately, there’s a way out, and the teaching on the way out is t...

Re: Is metta wishing criminals avoid punishment ??
Dear DW forum I read the following from Brahmavihāra Dhamma by The Venerable Mahāsi Sayādaw of Burma: Take the case of an accused person who has committed a criminal offence. In such a case, one should develop loving-kindness and compassion to the best of one’s ability in the interests of that accu...

Re: Monastic life and fond of work?
Bhikkhu Anālayo lives in a cottage at the Barre Center for Buddhist Studies. He is a solo monk, i.e. he doesn’t live in a monastery with other monks. My understanding is he spends quite a lot of time in retreat, for months at a time, and when he isn’t strictly in retreat he is leading retreats or wr...

Re: Disagreements about nirvana.
Is there any scholarly consensus on whether nirvana is consciously experienced after death? And do the different sects in buddhism agree with each other on this? No and no. If you want to read up on ideas about Nirvana post-Morten I recommend you check out the following sources if you care to spare...

Re: Vism.'s Buddhaghosa says the sukha-pleasure is experienced by a physical body in third jhana!
I doubt Ven. Buddhaghosa has departed from the Abhidhamma: “Born of detachment” means: Initial application, sustained application, rapture, pleasure, one-pointedness of consciousness; they in this detachment are born, begotten, existent, fully existent, apparent. Therefore this is called “born of d...

Re: Vism.'s Buddhaghosa says the sukha-pleasure is experienced by a physical body in third jhana!
The quote below suggests to me the Visuddhimagga accepts the idea of bodily pleasure in jhana- So uplifting happiness can be powerful enough to levitate the body, make it spring up into the air. 98. But when pervading (rapturous) happiness arises, the whole body is completely pervaded, like a filled...

Re: The Four Right Exertions vs The Four Exertions
The first set seems like the general principle and the second a specific instance of it. It isn’t difficult to imagine that one might use other methods to prevent the arising of unwholesome states etc, e.g. buddhanussati which helps prevent and abandon greed, hate, and delusion overtaking the mind. ...

Re: What is the Chinese translation for the term "body witness"
I think he wants the Chinese translation for kāyasakkhī which Ven Sujato translates as personal witness and Ven Thanissaro as bodily witness.

Re: Is dhammawiki.com article on 'Last thought moment' correct?
Apparently, undertaking right view at the time of death can be helpful in attaining a good rebirth. This is not the same as saying the last thought moment is decisive but it’s heading in that direction. Now, Ānanda, take the case of the person here who killed living creatures … and had wrong view, a...
