Re: Anatta - a hindrance?

I find astonishing how this thread kept going on after nibbāna being equated to atta . The whole point of the Buddha 's teaching is to rid oneself of self-views & conceit so that suffering may cease. When, through direct knowledge, the Buddha, the teacher, the peerless person in this world with its ...

Re: Looking for a Sutta

DN 16 Maha-parinibbana Sutta The Lion's Roar 61. And the Blessed One spoke, saying: "In whatsoever Dhamma and Discipline, Subhadda, there is not found the Noble Eightfold Path, neither is there found a true ascetic of the first, second, third, or fourth degree of saintliness. But in whatsoever Dham...

Re: Looking for a Sutta

Hello all,

If someone can help me, I'm looking for another sutta. Does anyone remember which is the sutta where the Buddha mentions that, Awakening is independent of the group as long as it has the 8 fold noble path? It may not be these exact words but something along this line.

Re: Dostoyevsky quote = Buddhism

Reminded me of: Not even if it rained gold coins would we have our fill of sensual pleasures. 'Stressful, they give little enjoyment' - knowing this, the wise one finds no delight even in heavenly sensual pleasures. He is one who delights in the ending of craving, a disciple of the Rightly Self-Awak...

Click here. It's the eleventh (11th) sutta or, if you prefer, the 14th bolded heading.

Re: AN 4.33 Sīha Sutta: The Lion

The only other sutta reference I can think of where the idea that learning about not-self will cause some sort of confusion is SN 44.10 Ananda Sutta , where the Buddha observes: "And if I — being asked by Vacchagotta the wanderer if there is no self — were to answer that there is no self, the bewil...

Re: Meditating in The Freezer!

I guess they were just trying to do him a favor and parinibbānize him. Wouldn't you want to reach parinibbāna ? If so, we'll have to put you in the freezer also. Don't worry, just sit back, relax and you'll understand this, very quickly: He understands: ‘With the breakup of the body, following the e...

Re: Ingram, et al - "Hard Core Dharma" & claims of attainmen

Ahem... "Monks, do not wage wordy warfare, saying: 'You don't understand this Dhamma and discipline, I understand this Dhamma and discipline'; 'How could you understand it? You have fallen into wrong practices: I have the right practice'; 'You have said afterwards what you should have said first, a...

Re: Ingram, et al - "Hard Core Dharma" & claims of attainmen

Monks do except all manner of gifts even if they don't need it. It's more about letting the giver rejoice in his dana than the monk finding it useful. Ajahn Chah, widely regarded as an arahant, received at least several million dollars worth of gifts from rich generals in Thailand. It stands to rea...

Re: Ingram, et al - "Hard Core Dharma" & claims of attainmen

So, I think they will not, it is not an acceptable offering to an arahant but, if done, it would not be used. This is because there is no engagement with it. So, even apart from not enjoying it while smoking, there will not be any smoking at all. So, there will not be any sensual-ing at all. There ...

Do you know the intentions of the people posting here besides from their writing? If not, why would you assume this? Certainly writing is not enough for you to ascertain this, is it?
