Re: Your favourite contemporary teachers

Ven Bodhi - for whom I am profoundly grateful is my teacher - for opening up the Suttas. Before, they were opaque - now when I read them - I can see. Additionally, his modesty, brilliance and sense of humour and commitment for truth and justice in the world are inspiring. Ven Sumedho - his teachings...

Re: What is Mara?

Mara (and his 3 lovely daughters) are beings that are higher than the Devas - can't remember which level - possibly the gods who control what is created. There are lesser Maras who are part of his horde or troupe. There is a reference to Mara's (Uncle??) in one of the Suttas of the MN. I would have ...

Re: Did anyone here attain jhana?

Nana, Tilt and Ben all have good thoughts here. Sometimes it is difficult when one doesn't have a meditation teacher. When Nana first started giving information on the Jhanas it was incredibly helpful to me - it gave me some sort of benchmark - which I hadn't before. Perhaps, instead of speaking in ...

Re: Did anyone here attain jhana?

In my opinion, Jhana claims aren't necessarily a big deal - although what one might be claiming as jhana could actually be a different sort of altered state - people can get to altered states even accidentally ... A clear headed discussion of a person's meditative state could be helpful to said pers...

Re: Theravdan vs Mahayana view of objective reality

This arises in dependence of this. That arises in dependence of that.

And that's the long and short of it.

Grok that and you'll be Buddho (the one who knows [the way it is]).

Hey Jack, usually just putting one's hands in anjali and saying, Hello Bhante, is sufficient.

It's comments and shirty attitudes like that Peter that can make DW a trying experience. Maybe sometimes you might consider shutting your gob.

Re: Pulling for Individual...

O I am so sorry to hear this - I really like (liked?) Indie - and always worried about him like a mother-hen - he seemed to have such mental difficulties. But he was a sweet, intelligent fun kid (to me he was a kid). A heart attack - he's so young ... it's really a shock. His poor Mum, he took such ...

Re: A Question for Theravadin Members

I take 'breaks' from things - I go in cycles - when I'm in a "Buddhist" cycle: I read suttas every night - and on weekends and I read- and re-read and re-read and re-read - until it hits home. My meditation practise has always been spotty - a few months on - many off - I do much "hammering out by lo...
