Re: Viññāṇaṃ anidassanaṃ & appatiṭṭha viññāṇa, 2 types nibbana?
I'd like to correct my mistake of classifying nibbana into 2 types. There is only one type of nibbana, obtained by arahants both during cessation of perception of feeling and at their death: " This is peaceful; this is sublime—that is, the stilling (cessation) of all sankharas (the aggregates),...

Re: Viññāṇaṃ anidassanaṃ & appatiṭṭha viññāṇa, 2 types nibbana?
I'd like to correct my following mistakes: 1) Viññāṇaṃ anidassanaṃ can be both nibbana without residue (at the death of the arahants their five aggregates are discarded) and with residue (when living arahants dwell in cessation of perception and feeling -- though their five aggregates temporarily &q...

AN 9.12: With Something Left Over "... Furthermore, there’s a person who has fulfilled ethics, but has limited immersion and wisdom. With the ending of three fetters , they have at most seven rebirths. They will transmigrate at most seven times among gods and humans and then make an end of suff...

New translations of relevant paragraphs in MN 49 and DN 11: MN 49: “Viññāṇaṁ anidassanaṁ anantaṁ sabbato pabhaṁ, taṁ pathaviyā pathavattena ananubhūtaṁ, āpassa āpattena ananubhūtaṁ, tejassa tejattena ananubhūtaṁ, vāyassa vāyattena ananubhūtaṁ, bhūtānaṁ bhūtattena ananubhūtaṁ, devānaṁ devattena ananu...

Re: Right way to practice Brahmavihara
Here is my way of practicing Brahmavihara: I. Mettā 1. Generate mettā (loving kindness) in the heart: 1) Use good-will phrases: May I be well and happy! May all beings be well and happy! [Good-will phrases can be used to generate and maintain mettā in the heart, and can be used to practice loving ki...

Re: Right way to practice Brahmavihara
Furthermore, the metta sutta omitted the development of right Samadhi, while emphasizing right view, sila, mindfulness (of metta), insight, ... The impression one got from this sutta is that practicing and maintaining metta at the all possible times without jhana can lead to full liberation. In this...

Right way to practice Brahmavihara
Dear friends, After reading virtually all the suttas on Brahmavihara, I come to the following conclusions: 1. The Metta sutta is likely not the original teaching of the Buddha, because it has a different sequence of radiating metta as Brahma Vihara practice from the standard sequence, and is the onl...

Are the Mahāyāna "sutras" such as Shurangama Sutra real Buddha's teaching?
I do not consider Shurangama Sutra as real shakyamuni Buddha's teaching, because in the entire sutra I did not find the mentioning of the Four Noble Truths, and the "full awakening" is not the awakening to the four noble truths. The author of this Sutra cannot be a noble disciple of the sh...

Is Abhidhamma the Buddha's teaching?
I do not consider Abhidhamma as the real Buddha's teaching, because the author does not seem to have sufficient respect for the Buddha and often deviates from the suttas. For example, the Buddha defined the fourth aggregate as "volition", but in Abhidhamma various "formations" ar...

Re: Translation of SA 359
Hi friends, Thanks for a great discussion. After considering SA (SA 359, SA 360 and SA 361) and SN (SN12. 39, SN 12. 38 and SN 12.40), I propose to reformat SA 359: "... 世尊告诸比丘。若思量.若妄想, 生彼使 攀缘识住。有攀缘识住故。有未来世生.老.病.死.忧.悲.恼苦。如是纯大苦聚集。若不思量.不妄想, 无使无攀缘识住。无攀缘识住故, 于未来世生.老.病.死.忧.悲.恼苦灭。如是纯大苦聚灭..." And...

Translation of SA 359
Dear friends, Thanks for your previous help. Some of you asked me some questions in my earlier posts. I'll try to reply to them when I get more time. Here is the translations of SA 359 from Ven. Analayo and me: "... 世尊告诸比丘。若思量.若妄想生。彼使攀缘识住。有攀缘识住故。有未来世生.老.病.死.忧.悲.恼苦。如是纯大苦聚集。若不思量.不妄想。无使无攀缘识住。无攀缘识住...

Compare SN 47.3 and MA 76 -- establishing 4 sati is for jhanas
Dramatic difference between SN 47.3 and MA 76: SN 47.3: "... “Well then, bhikkhu, purify the very starting point of wholesome states. And what is the starting point of wholesome states? Virtue that is well purified and view that is straight. Then, bhikkhu, when your virtue is well purified and ...

Compare MN 10, DN22 & their Agama parallels
1. Both MA 98 and EA 12.1 mention that the five hindrances should be all overcome before practicing the four mindfulness, which is absent in MN10 and DN 22. MN 10 mentions the sequence of overcoming the five hindrances, practicing the four mindfulness, and developing the seven enlightenment factors,...

Re: Compare Anuruddhamahāvitakka sutta AN 8.30 & MA 74
I did not say "Dhamma is not path". I only chose "Dhamma" instead of "Path" to translate "道”. The Dhamma is not only the path, but also the other three noble truths.
