Re: Book: 'Before we loved the Buddha'

Greetings, What if others respond by saying that your inability to see what's wrong, your desire not to complicate things, is precisely a part of the problem? If they did, I would tell them I can see plenty that's wrong, and that I do my best to ensure that I don't personally contribute to wrongdoi...

Re: Book: 'Before we loved the Buddha'

Greetings, I don't know what's wrong with just regarding people as people... maybe I'm over-simplifying things, but it works for me and those I engage with. Metta, Retro. :) That's the thorny issue, the difficult challenge. What if others respond by saying that your inability to see what's wrong, y...

I'm not denying this didn't happen, but who specifically? Re: Book: 'Before we loved the Buddha'

Greetings, Whilst I can see the dangers of needlessly dwelling over such issues, in recognition of my own privilege, I wouldn't be so presumptuous as to suggest to marginalised groups like the Aborigines in Australia or African or Native Americans or whoever that they are dwelling needlessly on suc...

Re: Book: 'Before we loved the Buddha'

I see where you are coming from about the problems and limitations of dwelling on certain narratives of hurt/injustice, etc. My investigation of these issues have not personally led to self-crippling doubts or hurt. Rather, they have been quite liberating. Whilst I can see the dangers of needlessly ...

Book: 'Before we loved the Buddha'

http://pressblog.uchicago.edu/2013/05/07/before-we-loved-the-buddha-by-donald-s-lopez-jr.html According to a famous Chinese legend, in 60 CE (or thereabout), the Emperor Ming of China had a dream. He dreamed that he saw a golden man flying through the sky, rays of light streaming from his head. The ...

Re: Tea?

Hi Kim There's a misunderstanding. I was evoking a rhetorical 'some might say' to allude to those (e.g. the author of the article) who may perhaps attempt to legitimise their opinions with the claim that English-style tea is a 'degenerate' or 'adulterated' version of 'original' or 'authentic' masala...

Re: Tea?

But it suggests the possibility that the normal English tea I grew up with was a degenerate (simplified) masala chai in the first place. Weird! Kim The history of tea cultivation and how it came to be adopted as an English habit is an interesting read. Roughly speaking, tea had to be pro...

Re: Tea?

Oh and I've only had it at eateries and homes of friends, have not visited those countries yet. But the chai (not the instant premix) of South Asian cultures like India and Pakistan - strong, very milky, spiced, and often sweet - they are in a class of their own.

Re: Tea?

Have had to avoid coffee because the high levels of caffeine are not good for an ongoing skin condition. I don't miss the caffeine hit so much as the aroma. :( So I'm rediscovering the rich tradition of Chinese tea which I've not paid much attention to, even though I have been exposed to it as part ...

Re: Sinking boat moral dilemma

There's no real world application here, it's just a thought exercise to generate a bit of conversation. Hi all I'd say that such a thought exercise can be valuable, in that it may be a way for us to cultivate greater sensitivity towards the limits of our capacity to know, greater hospitality to the...

Re: Anyone ever fallen asleep and witnessed it?

This curious question about sleeping - or more precisely, the question of how we recognise or know that we have been sleeping or fallen sleep - this question has occurred to me too, after I read this in Ajahn Thate's autobiography on a retreat two years ago. At this same period, I tried to uncover a...

Re: Mahayanists and the historical record

My response would be - What's the extent of influence that these things have over the way we frame our understanding of the Nikayas. This, I'd say, is a VERY important and invaluable question - regardless of whether we favour the Nikayas, the Mahayana corpus, or whatever. Invaluable to the extent t...

Re: Mahayanists and the historical record

Thanks heaps Ñāṇa! (Sorry i forget your actual that you sometimes sign off). I'm really curious about the recent publication How Theravada is Theravada? But what is really helpful is to have some of these articles in electronic format! I dunno why I never thought of looking up scribd... hmmmm..... A...
