Re: Should nuns and monks be political?
Greetings, So what political philosophy do you think he was? I think that's an off-topic detour that has been covered before in older conversations. I'm a little time-strapped at the moment, but I'm sure someone can find such a discussion for you, if you're unable to find one. Metta, Paul. :) Meh. ...

Re: Should nuns and monks be political?
Greetings Jerafreyr, The Buddha was an anarchist. On what basis do you come to that conclusion?! It's hard to envisage how an anarchist could devise a set of rules as complex at the Vinaya, but by all means explain your position. Metta, Paul. :) I can only answer that with a question. What sort of ...

Re: Should nuns and monks be political?
Absolutely. If they wish to be. The Buddha told lay followers to be "accomplished in ethical conduct and encourage others to do the same" ( AN 8.26 ). The Buddha likely gave monastics similar instruction. Personally, I can't remain silent and detached when I know someone's politics are ca...

Re: Attainments
Firstly, we give things away to create the conditions for what the Buddha called seclusion, which is a factor to meditation. Giving is often overlooked. When people find meditation difficult it is because the element of generosity is lacking. why the need to sit? It sometimes is easy to get attached...

Re: No self theory do I get it right?
To ordinary people who are not engaged on the path to awakening I do not discuss whether or not there is a self because it is futile. To those who wish to develop changeless wisdom, to untangle the knot of views and to put an end to craving - they should understand there is no self. If there were a ...

Re: Attainments
Hi everyone! I am reading the Sutta's, and there are a whole lot of 'attainments'. I feel that I have a lot of work to do, but should I aim for these levels, such as the Jhanas, which are mentioned most frequently, or just keep on meditating and they will come naturally? I don't want to get too fix...

Re: No self theory do I get it right?
I am sure some kind soul out there can explain to me the "no self" theory. I may be wrong or totally wrong, from what I understand say if I called myself John or Jack and which part of me is John or Jack, the brain, the cells? Or if you say the whole person but the whole person is not the...

Shed childish friends if you value attaining enlightenment. If it's entertainment you desire, do whatever you wish until the time comes when you grow disenchanted.

Re: the great Nibbana = annihilation, eternal, or something else thread
you're trying to justify annihilation while missing the difference between no self & not self If all is not self why clutch to the mountain of nothingness? There is no self but the imputation of "I am," which is like the effect of a magic trick; the awe of ignorance. There is no diffe...

Re: Are five hindrances eliminated in the first Jhana?
None of the hindrances arise in jhana. They knock one out of jhana.
And which text says they are suppressed?

Re: Are five hindrances eliminated in the first Jhana?
The hindrances are not eliminated until you completely enter the awakened mind. The hindrances are not suppressed by concentration in jhana. Rather it is like the flight of a plane whereby the ascent to the jet stream is met with conditions which can cause turbulence.

When the Buddha abides in the jhana of boundless space is it delusion?
