Re: What is the yardstick to determine a monk as Theravada?

Ajahn Brahm was expelled from a particular grouping of monasteries. That doesn't negate his ordination.

Re: Who is the foremost western budhhist teacher?

Being "western" isn't a "general ethnicity". If you mean white, then you could say that. I think he just meant European or American. Yes, it's all a little meaningless without a lot of qualification. For example, is a Chinese person whose parents came to New Zealand, Australia, or North America for...

Yes, there are many monasteries you can stay in in Thailand (and in the west, of course). Of course, they would appreciate a donation or some other assistance...

Re: Wisdom Publications sale: 40% off of all their books

Is it possible to copy text from their epubs? I do it all the time. I usually use Linux tools for reading pdfs and epubs, but I just checked and the PDFs I purchased are copyable using Acrobat. The epubs are copyable from Calibre. And, yes, shipping from the US to the rest of the world is expensive...

Re: Consider closing the Waharaka Thread

Hi Trekmentor, ... The choice is yours. You can either continue to debate, as is your right, which will allow you to expose what you consider to be deceitful practices and faults; or you can refrain from debating and allow those you consider to be in error to continue. If you think carefully, you mi...

Re: What i think about mental noting

By the end of the retreat I never wanted to verbalize a note or thought ever again, I could see the stress in it directly. Interesting how different people have different experiences with these techniques. Which probably demonstrates the need to find something that works for you. Personally, I have...

Re: What i think about mental noting

If you don't make a conscious decision to stop the verbalization of mental noting it does not stop by itself or you haven't tried that? It's not that I don't make a conscious decision, it's that I find it stressful. The only reason I would employ the verbalized mental noting is because the hallucin...

Thanks. Unfortunately, I can't see the In the Buddha's Words recordings there, unless I'm missing something.

Anyone know what’s wrong with the noblepath.org website? Are Ven. B. Bodhi stalks available anywhere else?
Hmm. Hopefully a temporary problem...

They may have been mirrored on one of the other Dhamma sites, but I can't locate any right now.

Re: Are Rapture and Pleasure (Piti Sukha) Experienced in Nibbana? It Seems So!

Isn't that even more reason for not thinking that it is particularly significant - that it turns up in these smackdown contests with Brahma? Whether it is a smackdown contest is a moot point but it is clear that the Buddha therein is explaining what makes an Ariya superior to any other being in Sam...

Even tho it only appears in a couple places in that exact wording whenever it does appears it has immense importance. Afterall it is the thing that makes the Buddhas superior to Brahma. .... Re: Are Rapture and Pleasure (Piti Sukha) Experienced in Nibbana? It Seems So!

This seems to be a perennial topic. I would be wary of reading too much into viññanam anidassanam, which only seems to appear in a couple of places in the canon: https://dhammawheel.com/viewtopic.php?t=12510 https://dhammawheel.com/viewtopic.php?f=25&t=10017#p153428 https://sujato.wordpress.com/2011...

Re: The teachings of Ven. Waharaka Abhayaratanalankara Thero

As I have pointed out, Pali does not have its own alphabet. Tipitaka was written with Sinhala alphabet. When the European scholars started translating the Tipitaka, ... Even if this analysis were correct, I struggle to see how a few English scholars, or the Sinhala language, would have had any impa...
