Re: Pali Term: Nimitta

You are welcome! It reminds me of the NLP/Hypnosis word "Anchoring" Yes, it's somewhat similar. The difference is that nimitta is used consciously to enter samadhi. Simple stimulus-response link won't be of much use here, since samadhi is a higher order, less conditioned state. One has to deconstruc...

Re: Pali Term: Nimitta

Thanks for the response! So would you say a nimitta is more like a familiar intuition, or a familiar hunch? Like a landmark or pattern that one has recognized before leading to jhana? In Mohavicchedani (Mya: .161) we read: "Samathova taṁ ākāraṁ gahetvā puna pavattetabbassa samathassa nimittanti sam...

Re: Developing Nimittas as in Visuddhimagga ?

Hey thanks for posting this. What do you think of Bhikkhu Sona's article comparing Patisambhidamagga to the Vissudhimagga's nimittas? It's been a pioneering work, which prompted many people, including myself, to explore this topic: https://dhammawheel.com/viewtopic.php?f=23&t=2770 Also what kind of...

Re: Pali Term: Nimitta

Also what kind of nimitta is the Vissudhimagga referring to? Feelings or something else? Here is Bhikkhu Sona's article where he talks about the visual nimitta in the vissudhimagga. https://www.arrowriver.ca/dhamma/nimitta.html In the course of time, Pali terms underwent semantic shift from abstrac...

Re: Will we ever find a good Theravada Forum

1. Criticize Suttas and have less faith in Theravada doctrine 2. Biased towards Modern criticisms, West and Feminism 3. Gang up against Theravada views Well, scientism, cultural Marxism and postmodernism are rampant in the West. Seems like you are from Asia, and these things are culturally foreign ...

Re: Developing Nimittas as in Visuddhimagga ?

Highly regarded venerable Nyanavimla advices not to develop nimittas as the Visuddhimagga says. It depends on how you interpret "nimitta" . In our times it's often misinterpreted as some arbitrary hallucinative visual image, which spontaneously appears during meditation. This is not what Visuddhima...

My understanding is that attaining jhana once doesn’t automatically make one a non-returner.
Indeed, it's only Anagami who doesn't enjoy sex.

Bodhisatta had a jhāna glimpse in childhood, and this did not preclude sexual life for him.

Re: Pali Term: Dhamma

On the meaning of dhamma as the sixth external sense base ( āyatana ): IDEA: the word dhamma is gerundive from the verb dharati (to carry, to remember) , thus it means literally a "carryable, a rememberable." In this context of the six pairs of Bases it means the rememberables which form the mind's ...

Re: adjectives go before or after noun in Pali?

Here are many examples. They are all Dhamma center names in Sri Lanka: Dhamma Siri, Dhamma Kuta, Dhamma Ārāma, Dhamma Bhubaneshwar, Dhamma Cetiya Paṭṭhāra, Dhamma Lābha, Dhamma Manohara, Dhamma Mitta Yāna. In every case, the adjective follows "Dhamma". Perhaps for emphasis, as aforementioned. Why d...

Re: what 'dhamma' is exactly in vaya-dhamma?

For a selection of suttas where dhammā is used in this way, see Bhikkhu Bodhi's introductions to his translations, such as linked here: https://discourse.suttacentral.net/t/translating-dhamma-and-dhamma/2924/7?u=mikenz66 Yes, there's one more passage at: https://dhammawheel.com/viewtopic.php?f=23&t...

For starters Dhammā is plural nominative correct?
No, it's an adjective.
second question, is sampadetha (accomplish) referring back to the previous sentence or an unnamed object?
No.

In the gatha describing 9 qualities of lord budda as :
Itipiso bagava arahan samma sambuddo ...........
..... satta devamanussan buddo bagavati
satta devamanussan is translated as teacher and leader of men and devas or unexcelled trainer of men and devas.
In the gatha the word is "sattha".
