Re: Does Buddhism mean living in a cocoon

Does following the Dhamma mean that I should ignore / tune out some parts of the news so as not to get agitated. I think so, yes. What is meditation if not tuning out some parts of the world? We sit in silence so we can notice the noise we make in our own heads. Then we silence that noise as well. ...

Re: Is intention kamma?

Is intention itself kamma? For example, if one has an intention to undertake some deed, but ends up not doing the deed, is the intention itself considered kamma? As I understand the teachings, yes an intentional thought still has consequences, even if that thought does not immediately turn into wor...

Re: Brackets of Buddhist or Buddhism

I'm not sure I understand what you are saying. What is unfortunate? Why is it unfortunate? You said a lot but I couldn't find your point. I'm sorry. On perhaps a related note... I think to be accurate, there is no such thing as "Buddhism" or "Buddhist". There is only the Buddha, his teachings, and t...

Re: Religious criticism

Here in the US, politics is, as always has been, something we try to convince each other. Debates, town square meetings, advertisements. I don't see anything odd about people discussing and debating and arguing about what is the right way to govern. The whole point of a democracy is government by th...

Re: heyo

Neat. It just feels more comfortable having this name. Thanks for that.

It's crazy... I don't even remember this forum. 3 yrs ago. Wow. I hope participating will be a more positive thing for me this time. And I hope my presence will be positive for others. :)

Either way, but once you've decided it would be best to let admin know so they can deactivate the other account. You wouldn't want to get done for double-nicking  How else am I going to argue with myself about rebirth and annata and stuff? Honestly, if I had my choice, I'd delete the new...

How has it been running this forum? I'm a bit surprised y'all are still here and keeping on with it. There are some interesting new forums and sub forums. And that guide to starting new thread is quite nice.

Re: heyo

Holy crap! It's been three years since I was last here? Wow.
So I've had another kid since then. I currently have a six yr old and a two yr old. They keep me busy.
Do people have a preference if I use Peter or kc2dpt? I don't use my name on any site so it's an odd feeling for me.

Re: The meaning of paccaya in DO

I don't see how one could produce the same grammatical result with a verb. Ignorance conditions the fabricators... It makes perfect sense and is grammatically logical. Yes, that phrase is grammatically fine. However, what I was getting at is there is no grammatically viable way to use it as a verb ...

Re: The meaning of paccaya in DO

"Conditions" doesn't work for me. It sounds like "influences" and that's not what is meant. What is meant is "necessary condition". Feeling is a necessary condition for craving. If there was no feeling then there could not be craving. I don't see how one could produce the same grammatical result wit...

Re: Why didn't the Buddha teach around the world?

I think the OP question is a fair one and I'm glad to see it has received some intelligent speculation in reply. I like most the answer regarding focusing his efforts to establish a community. That makes good sense to me. I think answering with "Because it was too far to walk, dummy" is unhelpful an...

Re: The Way to Stream-entry

Knowing me pretty well, some highly respectful monk recommended that I shall spend as much time as possible on concentration meditation. But now I'm not sure if that's what I should do at the beginning stage. You should do what that monk, who is highly respectable and knows you pretty well, tells y...
