Re: A Talk by U Tejaniya at the Wembley Vihāra London

Hello,

Thanks for the info on Sunday's talk. I didn't end up making it to Ven U Tejaniya's talk in the end, due to a prior committment.

Re: Modern Burmese vipassana dates back to the 1700s

Recently saw a paper which mentions vipassana texts from the 18th century: "[...] The earliest known record of someone who challenged this assumption is that of a monk from the Sagaing Hills in Upper Burma named Waya-zawta whose movement flourished during the reign of Maha-damma-yaza-dipati (r. 173...

Re: Suttas on harmlessness (avhimisa)?

Dear santa100,

Thank you very much for the references. I found the collection of suttas on the A2I website particularly helpful. Another good one is Dhp 300.

Suttas on harmlessness (avhimisa)?

Hello,

Does anybody know of texts that explain harmlessness (avihimsa) and what the benefits of its cultivation are?

Many thanks!

Re: The State Of Asian Buddhism

I wouldn't give the quote that much credence. There is a long history of westerners commenting on the parlous state of Buddhism among the poor benighted Asians that goes back to the days of Marco Polo and beyond. For some balance, you should read Donald Lopez's 'From Stone to Flesh' http://www.amaz...

Dear Anagata,

Thanks for your response. That makes sense and might explain why enlightenment still seems to be possible despite the dire predictions.

Dharma Bum: a new movie about U Dhammaloka

I just came across this recent movie about the Irish monk U Dhammaloka, who appears to have been the first Western monk ever. For those who are interested in helping, the producers are currently raising funds:

Re: What are the hurdles hindering Dhamma propagation in the US?

The growth of Buddhism in the United States has been nothing short of explosive. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Buddhism_in_the_United_States" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; This article states that: In 2012, U-T San Diego estimated U.S. p...

Re: Duration of sasana and interval between Buddhas?

Dear Ven. Dhammanando, thanks for your reply. I can see how even the slightest advance on the Path is already worthwhile, especially if it can assure eventual deliverance from samsara (not to say the benefits of happiness and peace enjoyed in this life). So perhaps living in an age in which arahants...

Re: Duration of sasana and interval between Buddhas?

Dear santa100 and robertk, Thank you for your responses. It seems then that one should not get too hung up on that number, since its legitimacy is dubious. Even the numbers quoted by Bhikkhu Bodhi (2000 years for arahants, etc) are not particularly encouraging, as they would indicate that in our epo...
